Desi Cartman
pls dont compare RD and UV ... u'll never win the argument ... All I can say is, even if you want to compare these 2 on the basis of recent form UV will still be behind RD .. in last 12 months UV 3 tests @ 31.xx RD 12 Tests @ 37.xx even in poor form RD has a better average than the slogger ! Chandan
Test team announced, 14 members in the team, Kartik as 3rd spinner and no Gambhir and Ishant ruled out. Bhajji and Yuvi declared fit. But who is the second opener then? Jaffer? Seamers? RPS? And is Sree included or not? Very confusing!!! PS: Selectors wanted a 15 man squad but BCCI asked for only 14, hence Gambhir was dropped. Bhajji and Dhoni to undergo fitness test on 21st. Karthik on standby if Dhoni fails the test; Zaheer could be ruled out for entire series; Ishant out of first two tests; Chawla on standby if Murali Kartik doesn't recover from the twisted ankle. Hence the squad is: 1.Sehwag 2.Jaffer 3.Dravid 4.Sachin. 5. Ganguly 6.Laxman 7.Dhoni 8.Kumble 9.Bhajji 10.Murali Kartik 11.Pathan 12.RP Singh 13. Sreeshanth, and 14.Yuvraj Link to comment
theguyinallblue
Chandan...Sehwag is there in the team as opener.. i am not at all happy with the selection of Yuvi and Bhajji in the team.. KKD has been dropped...but Yuvi has been persisted with... Rohit sharma..or BAdrinath should have been included in the team...in place of Yuvi... i think quota system still very much in practice in the selection of the teams.. Yuvi's selection in the team defies all logic... Badrinath has not been discussed at all....Manoj Tiwary,...Suresh Raina...these were the performers in Ranji matches..and their hardwork has been ignored.. i am disappointed with Kirstein and Kumble... i thought Kumble will bring some sanity in team selection... Dhondy
What was the purpose of my "rant"? According to Srinath, this site is regularly read by Indian players. By extension, can some of the selectors be far behind? I had to point out the fallacy of leaving out tried and tested Test performers such as Sehwag, Jaffer and Sreesanth in favour of discards or ODI specialists such as Gambhir, Chopra or PK. I'm not deluded enough to imagine that articles here enjoy wide readership, but even if one person who has a say in selection matters read this, and paused for thought, the hour writing it up was well spent. Bhajji and Karthik are dead weights. In fact, the latter is the stooge I was refering to, and won't make it to the final XII. No foresight there at all, as he's not even one for the future. Ishant's exclusion was shocking, although he'll undergo another fitness test before the 2nd Test. He was on record as saying that he is fit, his toe "injury" is no more than mild bruising that most fast bowlers in the world have bowled through over the years (usually deroofing the shoe above the big toe to take the pressure off the toe- try bowling fast for a few overs, you'll find it's completely unavoidable). I suspect the selectors succumbed to pressure from Shahrukh Khan and company to spare Sharma for the IPL tamasha. They have too much invested in the lad to risk an injury. India have lost their number one match winner, but thankfully have RP and Sreesanth, who will make life very difficult for the South Africans indeed. Link to comment
Dhondy
I'd never read too much into one day results, but RP Singh's five-fer against North Zone in the Deodhar shows he's back to his devastating best. He took out the top 5, including Sehwag for less than a run a ball 81. (PK bagged a single wicket.) Insofar, his premature exit from the Aussie tour was a blessing in disguise, as there's no way he'd have been fit here had he played at Adelaide. India's fortunes in the first Test will be solely decided by whether Sreesanth can provide support to RP from the other end, and set up the platform for Kumble to showcase his skills. Bhajji will be a passenger, particularly in the first innings, so India are effectively going in with three bowlers, unless the team management pull the foolish trick of putting in Pathan as an opener ahead of Jaffer to bolster the bowling. Wouldnt be surprised if they did that, because nobody in their right mind has any confidence in Bhajji any more, while not having the gumption to sit him out at Madras (They have been reading some of the other POVs expressed here about his indispensability, you see). Gambit
You got your wish Dhondy. Even BCCI aren't that foolish to drop Veeru after his showings in OZ. Yuvi's selection is good because I think he will do well on Indian tracks. Away from the subcon, he seems to be like Dinesh Gandhi but in India, he is more assured and confident. I think this XI will play at Chennai: Sehwag Jaffer Dravid Tendulkar Laxman Yuvraj/Ganguly Dhoni Harbhajan Kumble RP Sreesanth Gambhir shouldn't lose heart. His time will come sooner rather than later. Might even be in the 3rd test if Jaffer flops. Link to comment

Anakin
I don't know why the fascination with Jaffer. Although he's a HTB, GG should be encouraged more, specially after showing more maturity in the CB series. Also he's a left-hander, which would be more useful. And GG can score big too if he can apply himself like he did in oz. Link to comment
