1st half: Avg of 52. Coincided with among the most competitive cricket you will find, i.e. a declining WI vs. a rising Aus. Notable innings include the 277 in Aus and the record breaking 375 vs. Eng to ironically break the record of Sir Garfield Sobers, the batsman similar to him. Also hit the famous  501* in county cricket.

2nd half: Avg of 54. Played a lot against Aus, Eng and SA. Notable innings include that game changing 153* vs Aus, 2 double 100s vs. SL, 2 200s vs. Aus, the quick 202 in SA, the 216 in Pak in his last test series, and of course the 400* to reclaim the highest test score record. Became the fastest batsman to reach both 10k and 11k runs.  Could have reached 12k runs too if he had decided to play one more test.

All of the above also meant that bowlers from over the world including McGrath, Murali, Waqar, and Warne went gaga over him:

McGrath:  “That was Brian (Lara). He never changed his game,” McGrath was quoted as saying by The Times of India. “I may have got him out 15 times, but he also scored big hundreds and double hundreds against us when both me and Warnie (Shane Warne) were playing together for Australia,” he added. “When it was his day, he could do absolutely anything. Sachin was equally as good, but there was something about Brian where he could just keep going and he was slightly harder to bowl to than Sachin. He was more fearless,” he further stated.

Murali: "I have played against lot of great batsmen but one person I found very hard to bowl to is Brian Lara," the Sri Lankan said.  "I have played a lot of Test matches against him and he was one of the best players of spin and so he dominated me."

Tough Australian cricketer Ian Chappell compared Lara w/ his contemporaries, Tendulkar and fellow Australian Ponting, and chose Lara - A nice write up!

During the two halves of Lara's career, below is how he fared compared to other key WI batsmen:

His career had the major elements of a great adventure journey - a brilliant entry, the fall, and the rise back to the top. What could have been the icing on the cake? Maybe a batting average close to 60 as if he were more focused, he could have achieved that too.

wow .. @zen started emulating @harsh thakur

no one can emulate @Harsh Thakor  as

a) he has great knowledge of all types of players including old ones such as WG Grace, Hobbs, Barnes, and so on

b) his long essays have a lot of words in them. While my post appears long due to data tables :dontknow:
