Laxman and the tail

Recommended Posts

we saw what happened when Laxman was elevated to three in Sydney he was at his best he really set up the match i think if Laxman is bumped up to three he can actually have some partners to bat with unlike yesterday so stop blaming him for being so slow blame the team management for putting such a class player at number 6.

in another 2 years his career will be over. he has already lost his prime touch. I hope that Anil Kumble will make the sensible decision of promoting laxman in this series itself.

i have a theory about this: Laxman is passive aggressive in his resentment of being made to bat this low in the batting lineup. Laxman's chief exploits have come when he was batting 2 down or 3 down. At the moment he has been relegated to 5 down with only Dhoni below him. Dhoni, with all due respect is not a test specialist batsman and more often that you know it, Laxman is batting with the tail. Eventually a batsman of his caliber would grow resentful of such treatement. This man single handedly won us the 2001 test series against australia, was one of the most successful batsmen in australia in 2003-2004, and has been a consistent performer. Maybe promoting him up the order would motivate him to score with more zeal. Yes he did a shoddy job of protecting the tail, heck he did not protect them at all. the disdain with which he took a single of the first ball of Steyn's over to expose Sreesanth was absolutely pathetic... but then again, he has done remarkable jobs down there at times. For instance against Pakistan in 2005's home series, him and the tail added over 80 runs in the first innings of the third test, 50 odd of which came for the 10th wicket with anil kumble. Is is also possible that our expectations of the tailenders are bloated because of their exploits against england and the one test against Australia. They are at the end of the day complete imbeciles with the bat. Harbhajan bats with the IQ of a two year old, attempting to hoick everything and kumble for all his attempts is very very limited as a test batsman.

Why does Ganguly bat ahead of him' date=' with an inferior average? It's funny, innit?[/quote'] The best explanation i've heard about Gangu batting ahead of Laxative-man came from his older bro, Snehashish- when i asked him the question, i fully expected something along the lines of 'because Saurav is the better batsman'. But surprisingly, not only did Snehashisn concede that Laxman is a better batsman, he said that Gangoo bats ahead of him simply to put a leftie in midst of the righties and give the team regular occasions that a rightie-leftie would be batting in the middle period of tests. As simple as it may sound, it actually makes sense.

I have been crying my throat hoarse that only power hitters do well with the Tail and plainly, Laxman isnt one. When the team is six down and the tail starts coming and wickets fall in a flurry, you need your specialist batsman at the other end to take some calculated risks, so that the attention of the fielding captain is deflected from picking wickets to containing the runs. Laxman however, is at best a mute spectator to the carnage that happens at the other end. Yuvraj will make a terrific no.6
I agree

Long time ago- a year before the 2003 world cup, when i was back in Kolkata. One of my distant relatives that i am close to ( oh the irony!) lives next door to the Gangoos....IIRC, it was when Saurav was captain and back at #5, with Laxman bumped down to #6 despite having an AMAZING year or so at #3. PS: I dunno why Snehashish didn't make it- my guess is he is the studious type ( struck me as quite an intellectual) but he is a serious batsman-i've seen him clobber all bowlers(myself included) as if he had a lafraa to settle with the bowling jaat...

wasn't Shehashish supposed to be more talented than Ganguly?

I hate to say this but, the way he did not attempt big shots in the end today made me feel, he got a little selfish. Atleast he did not play a huge knock, for us to think that he is tired.
Certainly Laxman should have attempted some boundary shots, rather than routinely take a single off the first ball of an over

this thread is nonsense. i cant believe a thread can be started for such an issue that is quite retarded. how can a player be forced to change his role every freaking game. Laxman needs to be promoted up the order. His strike was good but yet people still complain, he plays the way hes been playing with the tail for the past year or so yet people complain, i dont understand why people cant digest the fact that Laxman is a solid middle order batsmen being forced to bat with the tail, he started of his career opening the innings and now hes ending it with the tail, even though his average is superb in either 3 4 5, he still bats at 6 to make way for Ganguly at 5. Lets face it Laxman a way better performer at test level than ganguly and needs to bat ahead him and i even think he should bat in front of Dravid.

I think most of you guys here have forgotten his match winning innings (79) at Perth. He batted brilliantly with the tail. In an interview he told that the tail wanted to take strike against all the Aussie bowlers except Lee. Same thing might have happened here in chennai. Calling him a selfish player is not justified. He gave up his icon status for the benefit of his team in the IPL.

What amazes me is that Saurav is actually right-handed but bats left handed. His left and right cerebral hemispheres must be firing some strange patterns up there...no wonder he is always blinking. And getting into trouble... Such and elegant offside player...smooth as silk...wonder what his brother was like? CC, any observations on his style?

Why? Sachin writes with his left hand and plays with his right hand.

I agree. Laxman has had a real rough trot. The man has never had a stable position in the side and he always deserved to be coming in at 3 or 4. The man is pure genius. Like most geniuses, he is flawed and has off days...but when on...unsurpassable and a pure delight. A total matchwinner. If you ask me, I would have had him at 3/4 years ago. But then, my opinion is not sought in these matters. :D
