9. V. Philander [useless in SC, but Rabada isn't great. Also better bat at 9]

Batting till 9 + 6 bowling options. The ideal balance that any squad should have. Smith can also bowl some part-time stuff.

Well we don't have their ability to play subcontinent teams yes.... but we can infer from India/SA performance against identical opposition.

 

Bill Lawry's Australian team toured India in 1969. That same team then went on to visit South Africa on Jan 1970 onwards. Here are their results in India and South Africa.

 

Australia vs India 1969 in India. Australia won the series 3-1.

1st test Bombay - Australia won by 8 wickets

2nd test Kanpur - Match drawn.

3rd test Delhi - India won by 7 wickets

4th test Calcutta - Australia won by 10 wickets

5th test Madras - Australia won by 77 runs  (Dec 24-28 1969)

 

Exact same Australia vs South Africa 1970 in South Africa South Africa won the series 4-0

1st test Centurion - South Africa won by 170 runs. (Jan 22-27 1970)

2nd test Durban - South Africa won by an Innings and 129 runs

3rd test Johannesburg - South Africa won by 307 runs

4th test Port Elizabeth - South Africa won by 323 runs.

 

Exact same opposition - see the results. Then tell me about that SA team. They would have murdered us in India.

 

My father mentioned this fact to me many times about the Bill Lawry team that dominated India in India and then got slaughtered in SA.

 

Not even the Windies with Hall, Griffith, Sobers, Kanhai have dominated Aus like SA did. Wi won 2-1 a 5 test series in WI in 1965 with similar Aus team.

fair enough. india were weak though at the time. i meant more along the likes of pakistan, west indies etc. we have no proof about their ability. I understand your point of view. india of that period werent exactly the benchmark worthy of being compared with right? 1977 team was so much stronger.

 I went with the best bowlers, and all 4 pacers are much better as a unit than Maharaj. Philander may be useless in SC, but the others can make up for him. If I am given the choice of X/Y, then I will replace Phil with Maharaja for SC.
