Sorry, a guy who retires at the age of 29 from Test cricket due to IPL money shouldn't be included in an ATG lineup of a great cricketing country like South Africa.

His name should be forgotten, let's give Devilliers the gloves or even Boucher of that doesn't suit you.

A truly fearsome team. Every one of top 6 have an avg of 50+ with the exception of Smith/Mitchell (whose are close enough), nos. 7 and 8 are excellent batters, batting till No. 9

6 genuine bowling options (Steyn, S. Pollock, Donald, Faulkner, Proctor, Kallis) + part-time options (Richards, Pollock, Mitchell/Smith).

Would be condition specific though. Won't be enough to beat GOAT level India In india but certainly in their conditions.

Problem with India in south africa is we don't have an all rounder like kalis. It would be kapil plus ash and 3 pacers.

My goat Indian side.

Gavaskar

Tendulkar

vijay hazare

Dravid

Merchant

Pant

Kapil

Ash

Booms

Shami

Srinath

Would win in Asia. Lose in S.A, England and n.z

Competitive in Australia. Maybe slight edge to us in Australia and West Indies.

How any other keeper can be consider ahead of Mark Boucher , who played 147 tests for SA, you don't play that many tests unless your really great and Boucher was.

he was a very good keeper. as a pure keeper, he would be the one in the XI. however, if one wants a strong batting lineup, then it would be ABDV

Boucher was unproven with gloves vs quality spin on SC wickets though. Lack of quality spinners in SA basically.

Boucher was not proven with gloves vs quality spinners enough. His batting stats are pretty average although he has played clutch knocks but de Kock is clearly better batsman.

Actually, the more I think it is fair to give gloves to ABDV only. All three remain unproven with gloves vs spin and while AB was not as good behind wicket vs pace as Boucher, he was still competent enough and was a much superior batsman so better go with him only.

yes, that's why I have him in my all-time XI. ABDV has kept to some good spinners in franchise cricket. Obviously he is not on Boucher's level vs pace, but for a one-ff test/series, he can be the keeper in an all-time XI. I am quite happy with mine, although some tweaks are always feasible.

Barry Richards

Eddie Barlow

Graeme Pollock

Hashim Amla

Clive Rice (capt)

AB DeVillers (wk)

Mike Procter

Garth Le Roux

Hugh Tayfield

Dale Steyn

Neil Adcock

Reserve Bowlers - Alan Donald, Peter Pollock, Kagiso Rabada

Reserve Batsmen - Graeme Smith, Dudley Nourse

Bowling heavy - and what a riches of fast bowling and you can find 3 or 4 more with average of 25.

You have 5 top fast bowlers in Rice, Procter, Le Roux, Steyn and Adcock!! Tayfield is the spinner.

gun bowling up for sure, but the batting (which was historically strong for SA) is quite weak. Absence of Kallis is also unusual, even if we discount his "easy" runs against weaker teams

The first 6 are good batsmen - with Richards and G Pollock esp good. Procter did not bat much in tests but was very good in FC cricket. Le Roux and Tayfield could bat a bit like Starc and Cummins.

I just picked from eras - there was a S African on rec dot sport dot cricket who rated Adcock very highly.... So Tayfield and Adcock from 1950's, B Richards/Barlow/G Pollock/Procter from the great S African team of late 60s. Clive Rice and Le Roux with their incredible FC career from the ban era 70-90  and Steyn, Amla, De Villiers from recent times.

Boucher has 5 test centuries , batting at # 7 ,

yes, but over a span of 140 tests or so. For an all-time XI, one needs a better batter at 7 in my opinion. ABDV is a far better batsman and his keeping is underrated, especially vs. spin

Adcock was indeed supposed to be a great bowler, and it was hard to decide between him and Donald or Steyn. Tayfield was a very defensive bowler, as per contemporary reports and also stats. Agree that Le Roux and Clive Rice were both excellent, as was Vincent van der Bilj

Great option but I just feel Elgar is the most clutch ever player from SA and fit well with their other legends

Spin isnt exactly south africa's forte ,so u play fast bowlers albiet quality ones even in subcontinent all are match winners and there is enough depth

Post apartheid S.a. the other players pre apartheid are mythical. We have no proof regarding their ability to play vs sub continent teams. Those averages of their batsmen would have dropped substantially had they toured Asian sides and played on Bunsens and flat wickets that offer low bounce for their bowlers.

So post apartheid team;

1) smithy

2) kirsten

3) kalis

4) amla

5) cronje. Captain

6) abd keeper

7) philander

8) Pollock

9) steyn

10) rabada

11) Donald

All out pace. No spin. That's their strength. Pace with skill.
