I think he was better than the faster version of Lillee before Lillee's own back injury in 1972-73. But they never played together then. Pre-injury Thomson was better than Akhtar 1998-2003 average and SR wise. Also Thomson did not have the runup of Lillee, never mind Akhtar. The loping runup and the windup for the slingshot meant he bowled faster for long periods totally intimidating other teams. That benefited Aus as a whole. After the injury Thomson could not generate pace off of the short runup and shifted to a longer faster runup like Akhtar and his results are just not there after that. Link to comment
