Desi Cartman Posted May 23, 2008 Posted May 23, 2008 Finally a good news to report In a rare display of honesty, a rickshawman returned a bag containing 25 tolas (250 gm) of gold worth about Rs 3 lakh and Rs 15,000 in cash to a woman passenger from Mumbai on Wednesday morning. Sheetal Doshi of Ghatkopar in Mumbai had hired Satish Godbole’s rickshaw from lane no. 10 on Prabhat road at 9.30 am to go to Laxminarayan theatre to attend the marriage of one of her relatives. She was carrying three bags containing clothes, valuables and jewellery. She got down at Shraddha lodge at Mitramandal chowk, hurriedly paid the fare and left without taking the bag containing the jewellery and cash. On realising her folly, Doshi rushed to the nearby Padmavati police chowky and alerted sub-inspector Kundalik Kaygude and head constable Pandurang Patole. Soon, the woman was pleasantly surprised to see Godbole drive towards the chowky. The honest rickshaw driver was also happy on seeing her and returned the bag containing the gold and cash. When a thankful Doshi was leaving the chowky, the policemen requested her to give a "handsome reward" to Godbole. According to the policemen, Doshi initially offered Rs 50, but after the policemen reminded her that her loss would have been enormous if not for Godbole’s honesty, she offered him Rs 500 more. Speaking to TOI on Thursday, Godbole said he realised that Doshi had left the bag in the rickshaw only after he reached his house at Laxminagar. "First, I rushed to the place where I had dropped her and waited for some time for her to return. When she did not turn up, I decided to go to the police." When the news reached inspector Uttam More of the Dattawadi police station, he called up Godbole and thanked him. More also organised a function at the police station to honour Godbole in the presence of additional commissioner of police (south region) Vivek Phansalkar, deputy commissioner of police (zone II) Satish Khandare and assistant commissioner of police (Swargate division) Subhash Dange. Phansalkar felicitated Godbole by offering him a bouquet and a coconut in the presence of the policemen and residents living near the police station. More told TOI that he has decided to recommend Godbole’s name to police commissioner Jayant Umranikar for a suitable reward because it will encourage other rickshawmen to follow in his footsteps. :isalute::isalute::isalute::isalute:

Rickshaw-waale get treated like animals in India, and this guy - as admirable as he is for returning the gold - made a big mistake. I have seen helpless rickshaw-drivers beaten up on so many occasions, sometimes for almost nothing at all (ie; pedaling into a pot-hole or something). It's as if their lives aren't worth anything. He should have just kept it so that he wouldn't have to keep pedaling around ungrateful c unts like that shameless r andi who offered him a pittance for doing such a good deed. Man, i hate India

Its not the land that make the country but the people. Not saying that he is right in hating India - he is wrong. 1 or even 10 misdemeanors don't cancel out the several good things that do happen in the country.

If the lady Doshi had complained to the cops and the driver had no returned the gold, wht could have happened " The cops would have told Doshi " madam, it is impossible to get it back, you dont know the rickshaw man , there are 1000s and by now the gold would have changed 4 hands and by evening will be melted. Even if by some fluke we can trace the rickshaw man, what can we do? he will say he knows nothing and there is no proof you lost it in his vehicle or not even proof that you had gold in the first place. But we can try using our informers, catching and beating a few rickshaw men or trying to trace through known pawnbrokers/jewelers who deal in such goods etc, but all that would cost time and money, and police already have 1000 other cases, what shall we do" ...The lady will then happily pay 10,000 bucks for her gold worth 3 lakhs to be traced....and IF the cops retrieve it...then again they will say " madam , we have caught the man, but this is compicated as you had given theft complaint and the man hasnt actually stolen it, and then you have to give proof of ownership with receipt of purchase and all that. After that, the property will be in court custody for 3-4 years till case is over, during which you have to attend court every 3-4 months to identify it.....now what do you want to do ? "....the lady will happily pay ANOTHER 10,000 bucks to avoid all this mess and simply take home her gold, especially as she may not have any receipt for it, or her husband may have bought it with unaccounted cash or may not want details of the transaction coming out etc. Also, just imagine, if the rickshaw man had simply returned it to cops and gone and the lady was not there, no way she will know anything....the cops would have simply told the man "hey, get lost now or we will thrash you and file a case against you...dont be seen in town for 1 year"...and the cops would have split the gold easily...or...they could inform the lady" we have identified some place where it has been sold, but we dont know who sold it. It will cost us 20,000 bucks to scare the pawnbroker who has it to return it, shall we do it ? Or it will take 6 years for you to legally claim it , because that man wont accept he bought stolen goods, he will say he bought it legitimately from someone" Any of the above could have easily happened, it happens all the time in India, it is almost impossible to retrieve goods once it is lost or stolen. That lady neither knows the value of her gold, nor she knows the value of that rickshawman's honesty and she doesnt even seem to know what all could have resulted as expenses for her.
