pensionplan Posted December 7, 2011 Posted December 7, 2011 Sooda, A great performance here (Perth test) or a great performance there(T20 Final) should not be the swaying factors when judging a player. One or two match wonders and even a few more than a couple are dime a dozen. So keeping that aisde if one were to look at IP's Test career as a bowler he has been nothing but pathetic (excluding minnows BD and Zim). We have a big enough sample size as of now to make such a conclusion. However just as you I am all for rewarding players who did well on the domestic circuit and put in the hard yards. Here Pathan has just begun to turn it around and 3 games to me is good but not enough to have a knee jerk reaction and draft him in. What is the hurry. Let them give him this season and a portion of next and see if he is consistent enough in his performances and also see if he has fully recovered from his niggles which has hampered him. I think the selectors were right in not picking him for the Aussie tour and they were right to give him a chance in a low key home ODI series versus WI'es to see how well he has recovered. I would have picked Vinay ahead of Mithun for the Aussie tour but will not lose sleep because it is the other way around given that Mithun did reasonably well over a period of 3 years in the Elite division with the ball.
Sooda Posted December 7, 2011 Posted December 7, 2011 ^Well, pretty much agree. Pathan has not done a huge deal in test cricket yes, but he has been very good in ODIs for the most part. He has done too much at International level for him to be called ‘crap’, or even for those good performances to be called ‘one offs’. Toward the end his bowling was too poor for the team to carry him so had to go, Im not blind to that. There is not exactly a plethora of options to choose from so it’s not a surprise they have gone back to a player who has performed for India in the past, see if his one day mojo is back. Mithun was in the squad but is NOT a limited overs cricketer. Like many I would have liked to see Nechim Ahmed given a shot instead vs WI and/or even Aravind-He had a decent FC season and IPL, good List A record was in the last squad but typical selectorial inconsistency has seen him jettisoned without a match. To tour Aus its a toughie- Pathan has done well there in the past and his experience but that Pathan was nippier. Id even suggest getting him play for the A team or BP XI before he plays tests. I hope he proves me wrong but Im not sure he can play as part of a 4 man bowling line up, but gives us the option of going with 5. Vinay has been consistent for Karnataka more so than Mithun but All being well Zaheer/Yadav/Sharma will be fit and Mithun will not play a test there anyway. Tbh Im not sure I trust Mithun or Vinay more than Pathan but going with either of them would be more consistent from the selectors point of view.
bulbul Posted December 8, 2011 Posted December 8, 2011 Today Pathan if got chance perform well...simply becuase of KT thread came out :winky:
Needforspeed Posted December 8, 2011 Posted December 8, 2011 Pathan will do well on Indian pitches. Left arm Spinners always do
Stuge Posted December 8, 2011 Posted December 8, 2011 Pathan will do well on Indian pitches. Left arm Spinners always do left arm spinners :o When did Irfan started bowling spin
deathmonger Posted December 8, 2011 Posted December 8, 2011 left arm spinners :o When did Irfan started bowling spin check his name - need for speed. anyone who's not phaaaaast is a spinner.
Viki_J Posted December 8, 2011 Posted December 8, 2011 Is it him or the selectors. Whoever is culpable should be sacked. Kaif is even worse. For how long has he got to perform poorly before people realise he is actually poor. so thats the point..if kaif is worse..then the question is will crapthan do it next time or probably the next to next time :haha:
Stuge Posted December 8, 2011 Posted December 8, 2011 check his name - need for speed. anyone who's not phaaaaast is a spinner. you mean Trundler haha
Sooda Posted December 11, 2011 Posted December 11, 2011 Of course there will be no post about this topic from OP-er until Irfan has a bad day. No surprise at all that I did not get a response earlier too...
Cricket Tragic Posted December 11, 2011 Posted December 11, 2011 I missed the start of the innings. How did Pathan bowl?
saneindian Posted December 11, 2011 Posted December 11, 2011 Glad to see Irfan taking wickets again. Bowling 128-133 and moving it both ways. Great return. That spell should have sealed his spot for the tri series.
Pagalpanti Posted December 11, 2011 Posted December 11, 2011 I missed the start of the innings. How did Pathan bowl? First delivery was a beauty. But over-all looked a bit rusty, 3 wides in 1st over as well.
ViruRulez Posted December 11, 2011 Posted December 11, 2011 Has Irfan increased his pace a bit. It seems he is bowling mostly 130+ compared to the 120s he used to bowl when he was last playing for India. Looks like improvement but will need to check more matches before judging how far he has improved.
