Need4Speed Posted December 9, 2022 Posted December 9, 2022 (edited) I have been very frustated with Iyer due to the promise he had shown but his failure on short balls were extremely disappointing.I am happy to see now that he is trying to address them. if he manages to conquer this issue he is a great prospect for our fragile MO. "Lately, he's had more success rather than fending or hitting over point or cover point like he did previously. Knowing him and what he's done and his mindset towards attacking the problem, he's not far away from pulling a 150kph bouncer for four or six. Is he there yet? He will be, very soon, but at 135-140 [kph], he's very comfortable playing that. He's worked really hard at it technically in terms of making those changes and understanding why he had those problems and what was affecting his short-ball game. If his numbers are so good with all these issues going around, once it's sorted, he'll evolve into something even more special." Lets see what future holds!! https://www.espncricinfo.com/story/ban-vs-ind-odi-series-evolving-shreyas-iyer-firmly-staking-his-claim-for-odi-no-4-spot-1348807 Edited December 9, 2022 by Need4Speed
vvvslaxman Posted December 9, 2022 Posted December 9, 2022 I have already seen him pulling a 140k ball infront of the wicket. I think it comes down to picking the right ball to pull. Rohit/Kohli/Kela/Gill all can pull well. Dhawan is pretty poor. But he knows how to hide it. He has to be smart about it. That's it. He is a good percentage cricketer. That is why he is being very consistent. He is a bit like Dhoni. Only thing that is missing is finishing.
Majestic Posted December 9, 2022 Posted December 9, 2022 He has enough shots in the book to survive in ODIs with the short ball limitation that he has. It is about match awareness and knowing your game well which Iyer probably knows it really well. However, he can't be complacent after getting to 60-70 as match winning knocks will cement his spot and not the 60-80 which are not affecting the consequence of the game.

He goes after big overs too soon. Other day he could have taken the game very deep and use the services of tail more effectively. That should be his role with Jadeja/Pandya missing.
Vickydev Posted December 9, 2022 Posted December 9, 2022 I like Iyer but hate this PR nonsense. 80+ mara to article nikal daala. Just in the previous game he got out cheaply to a short ball

Rahul saw wickets tumbling at other end and dragged one from outside off stump to score quickly and was caught at deep. Iyer was hurried by a well directed one

It caught the splice. Not a ball to pull in the first place. Avoidable. Having a great pull shot and missing straight balls is not strength. That is also weakness. it is almost like fans waiting for "i told you so" moment. He continues producing good knocks at decent clip.

How he is comfortable with short ball around 140. Only this came out after his knock, not when he got out to one just the previous game. He is a fine player but I hate such PR exercises

He was remotely like this few months back. His go to shot was back away for every short ball. From that point he is holding his ground and trying to pull. That is a vast improvement. I have seen several players that are weak against pull. Their performance against short ball rarely had any improvements right through their career. Azharuddin was a classic example. Steve waugh is another. It is very rare to acquire pull shots at the late stage of your career. He connected two solid pulls against high pace vs SA. SOmething we could not see before. So let us be happy atleast someone is working to iron out his weakness. Need4Speed 1

Indeed if he is working on it then it's good for him but the experts will come out praising once they see he is comfortable with short balls at that pace. His trainer wouldn't even have to come out with these words

Shows old style maturity in building an innings. For now this is an easily manageable issue. As long as he survives and scores i am fine. Sure he is going to carry this weakness all his life as you cannot become a perfect pull shot player out of the blue. He just has to be smart about managing it. As long as he does it it is fine.

He needs PR because his will be the only MO spot that will be decided upon by the TM no matter how well he does when the pressure mounts. Surya, Pant, Kishan and even Sanju are the names in the reckoning. Pandya and Rahul being the other two slots makes that a certainty

And also probably the most threatening player against spin which we suck against. based on the two matches we saw it is clear that they are okay to sit out genuine keepers to keep KL Rahul which means Iyer is their favored MO player.

Yeah he is consistent but it will only be his if he is undroppable. Pant in England won India a decider. Those stay in memory and he will be back in the reckoning as will SKY. As I said I like Iyer but he is the only one who'll lose his spot once he has a couple of bad games when the clamour for changes come about. The others are untouchable for TM.

I want SKY too. But he has to do something to get into this side. Shreyas Iyer heck even played Test match. He is already team's favorite middle order option. Pant cannot live on that 100 forever. It is going t be Pant vs KL Rahul. Ideally Dhawan should be kicked out. Even Kohli given that world cup is in India where he is not at all needed. He averages like 18 this year. With that not happening they will sit Pant out.

Dhawan if he goes they still have Gill to bring in, max Kishan. For MO, none of Kohli, Pandya, Rahul will be touched for various reasons not withstanding one is the VC and the other is basically white ball MVP. Iyer will be the sacrificial lamb if they have to try others
