First Innings: Temba Bavuma (c) lbw b Joseph 0 2 3 0 0 0.00 56.5 One brings two and Bavuma bags a two-ball duck on Test captaincy debut! That was absolutely plumb. Pitched up on middle stump. Bavuma plays all around it and the ball pins him bang in front of middle. The umpire has no hesitation in lifting his finger. That would have missed off, missed leg, hit halfway up middle. Bavuma thinks of a review, is talked out of it by Markram. 221/3 Second Innings: Temba Bavuma (c) c †Da Silva b Joseph 0 1 0 0 0.00 5.3 Bavuma has bagged a pair on Test captaincy debut! It's an absolute snorter, banged in on a length outside off and straightening away. Bavuma was on his toes and looking to defend and the ball just skims the outside edge and West Indies have another breakthrough 34/3 Clearly, he is SA's reservation pick, but giving him the captaincy seems to be taking it to a next level. Only one hundred in 54 Tests now and averaging only 33. He is making KL Rahul look like a World champion batter.

You need a Test batsman to convert those into big 100s. He doesn't do that at all. Nobody in Test cricket history would have survived this long scoring only 1 hundred after 50+ Tests (even Banga boys won't keep such a player), let alone in a fairly competitive team like SA.

Get your point. But off late SA test batting has been horrible. At least in the recent Australia series it was embarrassing to say the least.

He is making KL Rahul look like a World champion batter. bavuma's avg in last few years is in mid or high 30s (prior to this pair). especially at home, his 30s and 40s are enough to turn some games. he is better than some of the overhyped indian batters
