Ashwin didn't play in the last England tour, also he failed in SA.

He can't win a match, he would at max take 2 wickets, on the other hand a pacer can do much more damage.

He wouldn't do much here, so it will be much better if we go with a wicket taking pacer ahead of hi.

He played last WTC final and did well. Also generally done well in England specially when its dry.

How is SA relevant here?

Thakur can be expensive and doesn't seem to have form.

Ashwin picked some useless wickets in the second innings of WTC finals when the game was already done, apart from it he did nothing of note.

Thakur did well both in England and Sa, also won us a match with the bat in england.

Ashwin has not made an impact in any match in England, lemme know if you have some example.

Thakur averages 33 in England. Ashwin 28. and thats Thakur of 2021 in top form. He's no way near that now.

Ashwin got a lefty in 1st innings in WTC too. Did well in 2nd innings, not his fault batsmen sucked and we were defending 140 with seamers not doing anything on a seamers deck.

Bit of a stretch to say Thakur won the game with bat lol, saved from a tough position but from there on others did well too. Rohit won the MOTM there.

First of all Ashwin averages 32 in England.

Secondly, that is also based on taking many tailender wickets. I remember him taking his usual 2 wickets of the tail.

Your spinner has to take big wickets. Not just get two wickets per game.

Also he hasn't produced any impact in England in so many outings, Shardul did that in one match.

So definitely Shardul ahead of him, otherwise we will make a fool out of ourselves by playing 2 spinners like the last WTC final.

The distribution is fair too

Shardul played good but using team results to justify 'impact' is wrong.

For example Ashwin picked 7 wickets in Edgbaston 2018, but since we lost its not remembered as 'impact'. If team folded 2nd time in that Oval 2021 Test, that Thakur innings will be forgotten too.

Most importantly Ashwin even if not picking wickets will be frugal. Thakur can lose it very quickly and his wicket taking ability has declined.

Aus is miles ahead. if pitch is flat, Head and Labu will destroy us (smith will grind some runs too). if pitch has some juice for quicks, I expect Oz bowlers to outdo us since they are faster, taller (with more bounce), and almost as much swing. only chance is it pitch spins, but oval is not an outright turner
