Firstly, it was a HC decision to “recommend “ the government to give ST status to Meiteis based on a PIL filed in 2013 , under UPA. The BKP government didn’t give ST status as per law. Meiteis and Kikis have always had legacy clashes with Kukis and Chin-Kuki tribes infiltrating the porous border across Myanmar. These are infiltrators with Chinese weapons. India cannot man 1000s of kms of border completely effectively . There is trade across border and also tribes across the border have ethnic ties. Government should be questioned for not taking swift action, so state government failed , but since it is BJP it is a mistake of mammoth proportions. Meanwhile, WB can’t control deaths in a friggin Panchayat election! Also, the current government has increased the crackdown on encroachment of protected forest land and also illegal poppy farming which feeds the heroin trade across the border in Myanmar . It could be anybody triggering the clash, Myanmar based infiltrators backed by China, Christian missionaries and finally Congress itself. We can start seeing such clashes as it benefits them for 2024 to beat the incumbent government.
