Feel like this deserves a separate thread. Disgraceful decision making IMO, how is it fair to other wrestlers? Bajrang has declined so much recently, got teched by an NCAA rookie recently!!!!! Vinesh hasn't justified her hype for a long time now. Sure they may be great, but no saying that one of the younger prospects wouldn't have beaten them in a fair competition, to earn a shot. IMO, Vinesh and Bajrang don't have any chance in Paris even if they make the cut, better to invest in youth. Dharna can't be a reason to get this exemption, Sakshi Malik too was in the dharna but she chose to skip Asian Games as she didn't want to take the place of some other wrestler through unfair direct entry, good on her. So many youngsters who have medaled in youth world championships, not like we are starved of talent in freestyle wrestling!!!!

No direct entry, says Sakshi Malik on exemption given to Vinesh, Bajrang

"I am against this move of sending names directly because I don't want that the right of any player be taken away," Sakshi Malik told ANI.

Tokyo Olympics silver medalist Ravi Dahiya got knocked out in the trials yesterday, won't go to Hangzhou. These trial competitions are like a shark pool, so many quality youngsters waiting to prove themselves, and many of them potential Olympic medalists in the future.

Even Phelps, Usain Bolt at the peak of their powers had go through trials to be in their national squads, none of this direct entry BS. Just like cricket in India, we have this superstar culture, lack of accountability, politics etc. in wrestling, shooting and other sports. But often go under the radar.

One of the modern greats of wresting, the African American Jordan Burroughs was eliminated in US trials (for Tokyo Games) by an underdog Kyle Dake. Burroughs was a lock-in for gold, was winning everything in his path but that one defeat ensured he couldn't be in Tokyo. One of the biggest upsets in wrestling that year and Dake had to settle for a bronze in Tokyo. But rules are rules, must be enforced, USA is the greatest sporting power for a reason!!!!

Here in India such prestigious spots are baap ki jagir.

Why were both players exempted from the trial?

As opposition to the exemption of Phogat and Punia from the trials intensified, Indian Olympic Association (IOA) ad hoc committee member Bhupender Singh Bajwa had explained why the athletes were exempted.

He had said, "The old policy of giving exemptions has been going on. You will find out on the website. In the selection policy, you can give exemption to good players so that they do not get injured. It happened in the last Asian Games as well.

Wrestler Vinesh Phogat says she needs time for training Vinesh Phogat's first statement on trials: 'I feel sad that...' (abplive.com)

pedantic but don't think there are exemptions for Olympics even here. This article seems to suggest that

Who is to blame for Indian wrestling's Asian Games selection controversy? (moneycontrol.com)

First things first. There is no such thing as a direct entry to the Olympics. For each weight category, wrestlers have to win Olympic qualification tournaments to earn a quota for the country in that category. While the country deserves the right to send whoever they want in that quota, historically in India, the wrestler who wins the quota at the qualification tournament goes to the Olympics. The Asian Games is not an Olympic qualifying tournament. The Wrestling World Championship (September 16-25, Belgrade, Serbia) is an Olympic qualifying tournament. And the ad hoc committee will be holding trials, without exemptions, for that tournament.
