Doubt if Pant will be fit by the SA series. If Jadeja has to go down as ATG or better test cricketer than Ashwin, he should help India win the test series in SA as he is an all rounder and can contribute with both bat and bowl.

No way Pant will be back by the end of this year. Most reports I've read are that he will most likely start playing higher level cricket in early 2024. 

 

My guess is he'll probably play the IPL as a specialist bat and see how things turn out after that

I'd love to see someone like a Harshit Rana at 8 in South Africa. Thakur's honeymoon period in international cricket is all but over at this point.
