Chinese swimmers were allowed to participate in Tokyo Olympics despite testing positive for doping

As many as 23 Chinese swimmers were allowed to compete in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics despite testing positive for banned substances, according to a report.

As per Australian newspaper The Daily Telegraph, the global governing bodies for fighting doping in sport as well as swimming decided to go with the official statement from Chinese authorities that the test samples had been contaminated, allowing the concerned athletes to compete as a result.

The swimmers had tested positive for trimetazidine, a heart medication, during a training camp months before the start of the Tokyo Games, which was postponed to 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Chinese anti-doping authorities found the results of the tests were Adverse Analytical Findings (AAF) but cleared the swimmers without any penalties after finding that the samples were flagged as positive as a result of contamination.

The 30-member Chinese swim won six medals in Tokyo, including three golds.

The newspaper said that the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) and World Aquatics — then called FINA — were both notified of the positive samples but that both groups agreed the results of the tests were caused by contamination and did not sanction any of the athletes who tested positive.

“World Aquatics is confident that these AAFs were handled diligently and professionally, and in accordance with all applicable anti-doping regulations, including the World Anti-Doping Code,” the newspaper quoted World Aquatics as saying.

It also quoted WADA’s senior director of science and medicine, Professor Olivier Rabin, as saying that WADA’s science department reviewed the case in the months leading up to the Tokyo Games.

“We even sought pharmacokinetic and metabolism information from the manufacturer of (trimetazidine) in assessing the plausibility of the contamination scenario that was presented to WADA,” Rabin said.

“Ultimately, we concluded that there was no concrete basis to challenge the asserted contamination. Indeed, the contamination scenario was further supported by the combination of the consistently low concentrations of (trimetazidine) as well as no doping pattern with several athletes presenting multiple samples collected over the course of several days which fluctuated between negative and positive (and vice versa).”

Indian squad performed amazingly at the World Archery championships in China.

Compound team swept all golds except for silver in Mens Individual (Women's, Mens Team, Women Team, Mixed Team) - 4 golds 1 silver

Recurve team won 1 gold (Mens team beating S Korea), 1 Silver (Women's Individual beating 2 Koreans but losing to the 3rd in the final), 1 Bronze (Mixed Team losing to Korea in the SF)

Total of 5 Golds, 2 Silver and 1 Bronze out of 10 events. Amazing!

We can only hope. Can't curse them when they don't do well and do the same when they do. Hopefully this gives them confidence. I feel the performances of the Compound archers will give the recurve team more belief. Can only wish them the best.

Mirabai Chanu will mostly not medal this time. Will be surprised if she finishes in top 5, have been checking the recent lifts in that division and she is nowhere in the picture, even her peak form is 20 kilos below what the medalists will lift in Paris.

I predicted 6 months before Tokyo that she would win silver, which she did. Weightlifting is probably the easiest sport to predict medalists, you'll rarely see a a surprise or upset.

Anyway hope Chanu proves me wrong, she is also much older than the other competitors. Injury issues (that too rotator cuff, critical for lifting), the violence in Manipur also took a mental toll on her, from various interviews.

So maybe her last legit shot at an Olympic medal, maybe adrenaline can help her do something extraordinary.

Yeah. Chanu is a no-hoper this time.

@Gollum, I will not be surprised if we end up with a 2016/2008 medal tally instead of 2012/2020

First couple of days will set the mood. Shooting events will be first up, if we can win 2-3 medals there, entire contingent will get a boost. That didn't happen in Rio.

In Tokyo, though shooters flopped, Chanu got us off the mark on day 2 itself.

Agree that momentum is valuable, but another crucial factor is the quality and form of the personnel. And I don't have high hopes on this front
