Breaking News: Mohammed Asif caught at Dubai Airport

Recommended Posts

No question it is stupid and no question he knew the consequences....i am arguing however from a legal standpoint here.... trust me' date=' he is gonna walk...not just because Pakistan is gonna pull diplomatic strings, simply because if you have adequate lawyer support and MONEY, you can easily contest this from a legal standpoint, given there is zero notification about posession of contrabands and penalties associated with it in dubai airport.[/quote'] On a different note , I used to remember that you used to always argue that Dubai and some of the other Middle Eastern countries like Bahrain are more liberal than India ! How come these countries have such harsh drug laws ?

Karachi, June 3: Detained for possessing contraband, Pakistani pacer Mohammad Asif will know later this afternoon what fate has in store for him with a local magistrate court in Dubai due to announce a verdict on his case. Asif has been detained in Dubai since Sunday for possessing illegal drugs. The authorities in Dubai have conducted a blood test on Asif but results have not been divulged yet. Sources in the Pakistan Cricket Board said the Pakistan embassy in the United Arab Emirates and the foreign office were pursuing the case and awaiting a verdict from a local court later in the afternoon. The PCB has also rescheduled its press conference for 4.30 PST with indications that if the Dubai magistrate court finds Asif guilty the Board could also promptly ban him on Tuesday. The Board has sent one of its senior officials, Nadeem Akram, to Dubai to coordinate with the Pakistan embassy officials and resolve the issue. Interestingly, when contacted in Dubai and asked about what substance had been recovered from Asif, Akram said a small quantity of the substance was found from his wallet and it was a medicine prescribed by a local Hakeem for Asif. "He was carrying this substance in very small quantity in his wallet for the last four or five months and even forgot about it. He is also not sure what it is and it was prescribed to him for treatment of his elbow injury," Akram said. "We have sent his blood and urine samples for test and so far we have not got the results," Akram said. EXPRESS INDIA

The whole pakistani bowlers are charsis ,even some of their great legends including Wasim Akram . In one hand he had cocaine and in another hand some Neelma Hassan ,way back in 1989 .Two of his biggest weaknesses as i read it in some article . It will happen when u become so rich and with no good mentor ,plus a ''culture '' to follow .Asif is just following that minus fitness and greatness . He is talented ,but didn't do any thing after that PED issues .

Asif was tested by WADA team during IPL semi-final JAIPUR/DUBAI: Delhi Daredevil and Pakistani pacer Mohd Asif was detained at the Dubai airport for allegedly possessing a contraband drug. "He was carrying this substance in very small quantity in his wallet for the last four or five months and even forgot about it. He is also not totally sure what it is and it was prescribed to him by a local hakeem for treatment of his elbow injury," PCB’s human resource director Nadeem Akram reportedly said. "We have sent his blood and urine samples for testing and the results are awaited," Akram said. Akram denied any knowledge of the slapping incident. "I really don’t know because neither Asif nor the local authorities have mentioned about this to me," he said. PCB, meanwhile, has hired a leading legal firm, Angel and Afridi, to handle the case in Dubai. When TOI contacted a top official of the PCB, he couldn’t confirm the nature of the substance found on Asif. But speculation is rife that the Pakistani fast bowler was carrying either opium or hashish. On Friday, Asif played the IPL semifinal for Delhi Daredevils against Team Jaipur in Mumbai. According to IPL sources, the cricketer was tested by WADA officials on the day of the match. "The report of his sample is expected to come in a few days," a top official said. After Delhi lost the semi-final, Asif was supposed to board the Indian Airlines flight from Delhi to Lahore on Saturday evening. But the Daredevils reached Delhi from Mumbai around 11pm on Saturday. By that time, it was too late for Asif to catch the Lahore flight and there were no direct flights for the next two days. So, he was booked on an Emirates flight to Dubai at 4am on Sunday and was supposed to fly to Lahore from there. "Instead of going to a hotel for a few hours, he preferred to reach the Delhi international airport from the domestic terminal," a source close to the cricketer said. But no one knows what Asif did in the interim. "We are shocked to hear the news. In the dressing room, we have never seen him behaving abnormally. He is very friendly and I have never seen him take any pills during the entire IPL," a Daredevils player said. Meanwhile, Asif has been named in the Pakistan team scheduled to play a tri-series in Bangladesh which also involves India. If PCB has its way, the cricketer will be going on the tour and will probably be free to take part in international matches till "proved guilty". But some of the Indian cricket board officials are not too impressed with the way PCB has handled drug issues in the past. The International Cricket Council even expressed its disappointment at the way PCB dealt with the Asif-Akhtar drug controversy. "We are really confused with PCB's policy decisions. On one hand, they suspend or ban a cricketer and on another, an inquiry commission comes and permits that guy to play again for their country," a top BCCI official remarked.

in fatc ignorance of law is not an excuse in any country.
You are incorrect. In MOST countries, ignorance is not an excuse for criminal law cases. Drug posession is a felony. Out here in Canada, you most definitely can plead ignorance about drug laws, etc.

How liberal some of these places in the Middle East are really depends on your bank account. Have come across quite a few people who regularly indulged in alcohol etc in Saudi Arabia (Saudis too!) who were rich enough to never be touched and who'd never get into trouble.

That and/or who you know...same ***** in India....eg: drugs. Yes, it is not legislated as harshly, posession of hash won't get you owned in India in most cases...but trust me, if you have hash and someone wanted to **** you over, they can easily do that in India, because the law still exists that levies severe penalties against drugs. In these mid-eastern countries like qatar/uae,etc. you can have a fairly liberal experience (compared to India tht is) so long as you are not the immigrant labourer living in porta-cabins style ( ie, their equivalent of our dalits).

Asif likely to remain in detention

Cricinfo staff http://content-ind.cricinfo.com/pakistan/content/current/story/353533.html June 4, 2008 Board officials are concerned that the test results on the substance Asif was detained for have still not arrived © Getty Images Mohammad Asif is likely to remain in detention in Dubai for another three to four days, a Pakistan board official has said, quashing widespread speculation that he had been released or had charges against him dropped. Asif has been detained at Dubai International Airport since Sunday after an allegedly contraband substance was found in his wallet. Since then, the PCB has appointed legal counsel for him and sent a senior board official to Dubai to handle the case. Discussions took place between Asif's lawyer and prosecutors yesterday, though with no immediate resolution. A PCB official told Cricinfo that results from a urine test authorities carried out on Asif are still awaited, as are the results of a test on the substance itself. The fact that it has taken them so long to get results is in itself a concern, the official said. Further complicating the matter is the fact that there has been a death in the UAE's royal family, which generally means that the various states will observe a period of mourning now over the next few days and that public offices may remain closed. Several TV channels and newspapers reported today that charges against Asif had been dropped. Dawn newspaper reported the Pakistani ambassador to the UAE as saying that and that Asif was due to head back to Pakistan on the first available flight. "These are incorrect as far as we know," a PCB official told Cricinfo. "The charges haven't even been laid against him so far. As far as we know of the process, the airport prosecutor lays the charges down and passes on to the public prosecutor who will then decide whether or not this should go to trial. That process, we have been told, can take three to four days. But we are concerned that they have not come back still with results of the urine test, which they carried out on Sunday and the tests on the substance." © Cricinfo
