Turks are blessed by god or something. I don't know how they keep doing this. Late, late, late shows against the Swiss, against the Czechs and now, with THREE SECONDS REMAINING IN EXTRA TIME, Rustu punts the ball up field, the ball falls to Semih, who unleashes an UNSTOPPABLE VOLLEY to score exactly when that 1 minute of added time goes by. Now, i've seen refs blow the whistle within 2 or 3 seconds of added time remaining on the clock, and normally, the ref would have blown as Rustu took the goal kick. Bilic looked p issed and rightfully so - this will be discussed for a while. But man, what is with these Turks. So unbelievably good under pressure. All their penalties were flawless, and the Croatians completely bottled it. Now the question is, can Turkey go any further ? 120 minutes of play plus penalties will leave them feeling completely sapped. The Germans couldn't have asked for anything else. Plus, they will be missing their best player (Arda) and a solid centre-half (Emre Asik). As always, the Turks are up against it, the odds stacked against them before the game even begins and they will probably get longer during the match itself, but with divine intervention kicking in like this periodically, can they lose ? Greece won it in '04, can Turkey do the same ? hmmm... ...and in other news, Predator_05 bet $100 on Turkey to qualify for the semis @ 33/20 in the 50th minute of the second half. I'm grinning ear to ear, as you might imagine.

It was indeed a dramatic end to the game yesterday between Turkey and Croatia. Reminded me of that 1998 world cup encounter between Argentina and the Netherlands in which the Dutch scored in the dying minutes to take the lead and eventually win the game. An aerial pass from before the midfield which was skillfully trapped by Bergkamp, then the ball bouncing perfectly in favor of the Dutch and Bergkamp then toed the ball past the goalkeeper. It was a great game to watch, such drama and skills at view. Still remember that game because I was rooting for Argentina then.

Speaking of the Dutch, today's game between Netherlands and Russia should be an exciting one to watch with both teams very aggressive and offensive.

Fully deserved win for Russia, they completely outplayed Holland. Niether France nor Italy were as quick as Russia on the break, and they really lacked the shape and the drive that the Russians had in possession. Russia's second striker Arshavin was absolutely sensational. He ran the Dutch ragged. If Arsenal want him, they should sign him immediately. Unfortunately for them, his performance today must have added another 10 million to his market value...

Russia have revenge for '88. Quite sweet that their then tormentor is now the Dutch coach. Spain chokers? Surely not greater than the Dutch? That '88 triumph is the only major competition they have ever won. Even Cruyff and co couldn't go beyond the last four in '74. They are pushovers when it comes to the knockout stages- they freeze. And for goodness sake, don't rest your best players in the final match of the group stages. That's the third side to have paid the price for doing that.

Believe me, Spain are the bigger chokers. At least Holland get to the semi-finals on a fairly regular basis - Spain can't even manage that. Think back to how they were eliminated in all these big tournaments - the '98 World Cup, they threw away a lead against Nigeria for god's sake, courtesy of a horrific goalkeeping howler; in Euro '00, they fought tooth and nail against France until Raul missed a penalty in the final minute (which would have made it 2-2 and sent it to ET); in '02 World Cup, out on penalties to South Korea; in Euro '04, they needed just a draw in their final match against Portugal but still lost 1-0 as Portugal played them off the park; in the '06 World Cup they led 1-0 against France and then threw it away as Zidane and co. ran out 3-1 winners. They are even worse than England. Luckily for them, Italy will be missing the AC Milan midfield pair of Pirlo and Gattuso. This is probably their best chance to break the choking trend. They have never had strikers like David Villa and Torres, so let's see what happens

I have the video of that match. USSR were the favorites...but Holland won 2-0. Holland's present coach Van Basten scored a super goal on that day. Russia - Germany final any one?
