Average batsmen of Ranji don't succeed in test cricket

Really rate Rinku very highly for his temperament. He has shown he can handle pressure, and this shows in his stats and his success in T20Is. In FC he averages 54, and in List A he averages 49. He's one of the very few batters who's multi-format. Instead of making SKY or Gill the next multi-format batter, they should've picked Rinku.

 

If I had to pick a middle order batsman now, I would go  with Rinku.

I honestly don't rate Musheer much but he comes from Mumbai school so he has that hunger of runs that probably other more talented his peers lacked ... Look at Sachin Das from his batch .. he looked a cut above Musheer and anybody else.

 

Musheer has many weaknesses like we saw in Benoni against Aussie quicks & tbh even in Duleep Trophy he looked uncomfortable with short stuff.

Let's see how he goes.

Musheer is too young. Let him develop his game in Domestic and India A for at least two years. Should look at him when he is 22. For now, we can try Jurel and Rinku for middle order. Tilak varma and Priyam also average 50 or more in FC cricket and could be looked at too. Tilak should have been playing Ranji trophy instead he is made to play useless emerging asia cup. This tournament should be for third rung T20 players. Tilak Missing Ranji trophy for this crap is appalling. He is a test potential, not T20.

But there is no example at all.

Sehwag was the only exception I think who ended up having higher Test average than FC average after playing for a long duration.

Players like Labu are such examples.

 

However, when it comes to Indian cricket seems there is no exception in 90+ years. 

 

All Indian batsmen have their test average either similar or less than their FC average.

 

Those who averaged 40-45 in Ranjis end up averaging 30s in test cricket. At best they go upto high 30s.

 

Those averaging 50+ end up with average of 35-50.

 

India has tried 40 averaging batsmen many times and none of them succeeded. Yuvraj, Raina, SKY and now Patidar. Best was MSD who ended up with avg of 38 which was valuable as he was a keeper.

In SENA countries the domestic pitches are tougher and they have good pace bowlers domestically to exploit the conditions. When they make their international debut they get to play on better batting pitches which means they end up having higher averages at the international level. In these countries players are picked based on their ability and not by just averages as the selectors and management know what sort of conditions they score runs in. In India the domestic pitches are mostly good to bat bat on and that's why we see high averages and I agree that on such pitches if someone averages 40, their chances of succeeding at the highest level is going to be difficult. Indian players have to contend with difficult pitches even at home when they play international cricket so the chances are they are not going to average higher than their domestic average. Also when they play overseas they play on tougher pitches. So India need to make sure they get the right players playing for India. The only anomaly at the moment is Washington Sundar, who does not have a great FC record but looked completely at home against Cummins, Starc and Hazlewood. Sai Sudharshan as well whose FC record is ordinary but we all know how good he is and he has been very good at the highest level. Sky on the other hand with similar FC record looked completely at sea in the chances he received at the highest level in Tests. The other player who has gone under the radar from TN is Pradosh Ranjan Paul, who could be a great back up for Pant. He batted brilliantly in SA during India's A tour last year scored an amazing hundred. He averages 59 in FC and is only 23. I feel sorry for B Indrajit as he is already 30 and has never been considered for India even after averaging 53 after 80 FC games. Stellar record anyway you look at it. His situation is same as Abhimanyu Eashwaran (almost 30) who has played almost 100 FC games and averages almost 50 with 7600 runs.
