Seems like these days Television writers are running out of ideas and going into Reality mould while Cinematic writers have gone mentally bankrupt and turned their back on reality. I wouldnt have an issue if these Superhero movies were being done by some average stars, a la Christopher Reeve for Superman(no disrespect towards Christopher). But these days even the creme de la creme of actors have been smitten by it. Case in point Edward Norton and Christian Bale, two of the best actors of the younger generation who are doing Hulk and Spiderman. Not to mention Will Smith in Hancock. Others that have appeared in last few years are - Toby Mcguire(Spiderman), Robert Downey Jr(Ironman), Ben Affleck(Daredevil), Nichloas Cage(Ghost Rider), Hugh Jackman(XMen), Halle Berry(Catwoman), Wesley Snipes(Blade) etc etc.
coffee_rules Posted June 9, 2008 Posted June 9, 2008 I am done with Blockbuster movies. I have not watched any major studio release in over a year. Indie, foreign films have better content. Stupid escapist crap. Wesley Snipes is in Jail now, I think.

Gambit Posted June 9, 2008 Posted June 9, 2008 There sure is an overdose but Ironman is really good and Robert Downey Jr really breathes life into his role. It's one of the best performances in a long time. The last superhero movie that I really liked was Batman Begins. Christian Bale was terrific.

I ask the same questions myself. I have seen just a handful of good films produced by Hollywood in this decade, not even remotely comparable to the 90's when a good film came out every year. It's all about the digitally enhanced crap in IMAX now.

My handful would include; - City of God - Training Day - Gladiator - Requiem for a Dream - A Beautiful Mind - American Psycho That's pretty much it...i might have forgotten one or two.

Not that other arent good but SOW is on a completely different plane altogether. The climax is completely unique and the monoolgue delivered by Pacino - Five years back I would have put a fire through this place - is as good a scene as I have seen in any movie. Recently there have been movies but mostly those of Independent variety as others have mentioned. For example I greatly liked The Little Miss Sunshine, quite an endearing movie. No SOW of course but it has its place.
THX_1138 Posted June 10, 2008 Posted June 10, 2008 To be honest, Superhero movies are inherently flawed. A Superhero does not assist society, he or she merely impeeds its growth. This was made abundantly clear in Frank Herburts' Dune series where the all conquering Mah'dip was responsible for not permitting the planet of Dune to embrace its own growth: of turning from a desert, and dry hell into a tropical planet where the local population would have embraced agriculture and ended their centuries old oppression by the ruling emperors and the various royal houses. Moreover, a Superman does not help society by removing Lex Luthor... Lex is supposed to be one the brightest beacons of intelligence and though he is misdirected, selfish, his conquests would have spurred humanity to greater achievements. Which is why i only like Batman. He is not a superhero, he is simply a human being embracing an ideal and his embodiment of an overdramatic character "bat-man" is merely supposed to make him more memorable than any ordinary human being. He does not engage in summary executions and nor does he judge people for their actions. Yeah i hate supermen like spiderman and superman, but batman is an exception.
