this is an issue taken straight from "Dial C For Cricket" on neo cricket the various reviews i heard, they posed new questions to the batting order each time so which is the ideal position for ms dhoni?? my personal opinion is that dhoni is at his best as a finisher he should come at no 5 with 1 or 2 batsmen 2 follow him as in yusuf pathan, rohit sharma, he will no longer be left out of partners 2 finish a game if he bats up the order, and somehow india loses him early, lack of quality finishers or experience or cool thinking might leave us panicking and throwing away r wickets and if he do bats up the order, who will b r next finisher??? can yusuf pathan cement his role, or will robin uthappa will b called back?

Dhoni has shown the ability to explode as well as graft. If we lose early wickets and are say 70/3 after 15 overs, then Dhoni can get into the grafting mode and score at 6 an over till 40th over to get us to around 220 after 40. And then he start firing, with plenty of batting to come. He knows how to play well even with the tail. In case he comes in at around 200/3 after 40, he can of course start in the explosive manner he was initially known for. No other batsmen in the middle order has the ability to do both these things reliably.

The way Dhoni is batting these days, he needs to bat at 3 He has the ability to guide and anchor the innings and if needed he can attack, coming down the order, he still tries to play the anchor role for some reason. He should leave the hitting to the new guys if he cant do it

Good post. I have made the same case for Dhoni to bat at #6 many times. With the exception of Tendulkar, no other batsman in the Indian batting lineup is as good as him under pressure. Nobody else can play the role of a middle order anchor better than him. India's top order is explosive enough to guarantee good starts on a regular basis, so he isn't really needed at #3. Problems often arise with finishing an innings strongly (either chasing or setting a total), and that's where Dhoni, with his calculated risk-taking and sensible approach, can make a big difference in a way other Indian batsmen can't. #7 is too low for him though, he should be no lower than #6. Speaking of which, it's about time Uthappa was brought back. He is the ideal #7, the best lower order batsman India has had in a while. He may not make a big score, but a quickfire 30 or 40 from him is absolutely priceless during the slog overs.
