he is a specialist against Aus - knows the team well.

He knows how to get the best out of the team and seems to be a great man manager unlike Rohit or Kohli. He should've been handed captaincy after BGT 2020-21 series.

also a non-performing captain. we need performing captains first

He would have got better out of Akashdeep and both the spinners I am sure.

Rohit is a third class captain but today the GG had some plans for some of the Austral batsmen and it almost worked but for the dropped catches.

I trust GG more ,he needs a new captain

Kick out Rohit and Kohli and then you can judge Gambhir as a coach. What do you do when you have a clueless captain whose only plan is "throw the ball to Bumrah"

...and thus make him into a trundler. if only he was used well (proper spacing between spells, 3-4 overs per spell), even putting all other mistakes aside, Aus would have been all-out for about 150-160 yesterday.

Rohit could have given at least 5 to 10 overs to Sundar yet he overbowls Bumrah. If at all he gets injured this fatso should take the entire blame. And what's with the ultra defensive field placing and not going for a win? It's like Dhoni's test  captaincy all over again.

Don't need to look anywhere, one captain won us a match this series.

TBF Dhoni never had someone like Bumrah in his team. Captaining like a phattu when you've Bumrah is just pathetic.

He never allowed people like Bumrah in the team. He was happy with trundlers. Credit where due, fast bowling picked up during Kohli tenure.

Both Shami and Bumrah debuted under Dhoni. Even at CSK Dhoni has backed Pathirana and Pathirana's performances under Dhoni have been way better than his performances for SL under other captains. Dhoni does have a knack of getting the best out of players. After all he won 3 tourneys with likes of Sreesanth, Munaf, RP Singh etc. with Zaheer the only decent pacer he ever had. Kohli had our best pace attack in our history with Bumrah, Shami, an improved Ishant and he couldn't win a single tourney.

It's fine to bag him for his poor Test record but Dhoni was so much better at managing his players and getting the best out of them.

He always went for draws...and had a liss poor away record...he's a good LOI captain no doubt.

Absolutely. He was way too defensive to be a good Test captain. There're a couple of Tests I recall which we should've win but didn't due to Dhoni being extra defensive - one in WI where we had to chase 80 odd in 15 overs and we called off the chase too soon, and the second one against NZ where we won the series 1-0 (IIRC 2008 or 09) where we could've won 2-0 but we kept on batting in the 2nd Test though we could've declared earlier.

Dhoni was defensive but not clueless like Rohit or not able to get the best out of his players like Kohli. He never misread the pitch or select a poor team based on conditions which was a regular occurrence with both Rohit and Kohli. You can call out Dhoni for being way too defensive but not for being clueless and lacking in tactical acumen. He did make us relevant in shorter formats and our best short format captain. We had our best bowling lineup post Dhoni and we still haven't been able to match what Dhoni was able to do with a lot less in a much shorter time.

By the way, Bumrah debuted under Kohli in the below match.

IIRC Dhoni recalled RP singh for the England tour when he was vacationing with his paunch. He came and bowled military mediums. That was a dreadful memory

Nope, Bumrah debuted under Dhoni in both ODIs and T20s in 2016 and by that time Dhoni had already given up Test captaincy.

at that time, bum was seen as LOI pacer despite good ranji record. credit must be given to TM under kohli that they played him as test pacer.

Well if someone doesn't give someone like Bumrah a chance you would seriously question their intellect. The question around Bumrah was not about ability or skill, it was more about can his body handle the workload for Tests given his bowling action and the stress he puts on his body. In fact I would still wrap Bumrah in cotton wool and use him only for SENA series and ICC tourneys. No bilaterals or home Tests for him. He could be with the team simply to mentor others and guide them but not play in those matches/series.

our home dominance is not what it used to be when we had shami and umesh (both were almost equally as good as boom at home). hence, he should still play against important teams and series at home.

Don't think he's needed at home else he will be done in a couple of years. We have a bunch of spin all-rounders who are more than handy at home. Make use of them - Sundar, Axar, Sai Kishore and groom a couple of pacers. That'll also force team management to think of other options and strategies to win other than relying on Bumrah all the time.
