Plenty of 200s, 300s from other positions, Lara himself scored 400, 375 from #4. 

 

For an opener uncertainty factor is higher, because he won't know how the pitch will behave. Those down the order can observe, learn and make additional adjustments. Also by the time they come, initial venom is lost to some extent, and bowlers aren't as fresh. 

 

Doesn't even out in the long run, a rare chance at 300, 400 vs exposing yourself first up against fresh bowlers your whole life. Graeme Smith, Sehwag, Cook were all better than many of their 50+ averaging peers.
