Why do Punjabis support Congress in spite of 1984 riots led by Congress leaders?

BJP had no skin in the game in Punjab. It never took a local stand, instead chose to be a lackey of the Akalis. 

 

Atleast the Congress fought the Khalistanis and can claim to have finished it. (Different matter that the K-problem was initially fueled by the Congress itself).

 

Many Punjabi Hindus and dalit Sikhs still see Congress as their protectors locally.

The Sikhs deserved a better right wing than the corrupt Akalis. No wonder many of them are falling to the Khalistani ideology.
