Why do Punjabis support Congress in spite of 1984 riots led by Congress leaders?

Equally important question, Indian sikhs have been some of the most patriotic ppl. They are probably 2nd in the list of states contributing to our military, so why doesn't the Indian state simply acknowledge the wrong that was done, prosecute those responsible & bring closure.

Hindus are a historical votebank of Congress in Punjab.

AAP made significantly inroads there in last elections but I suppose it was a one time thing.

BJP made an impression on Rural Sikh Youth prior to Farmer's protest but ultimately fallout undid years of goodwill and they have now decisively moved towards SAD and Congress.

Most important factor is there is no ground for them in Punjab.  They tried to rope in some corrupt Congress leaders but it backfired.

Remember SAD was part of NDA alliance and they were on a great run in Punjab.   Punjabis were defacto voting NDA by going for SAD and keeping Congress out of power.

I think jatt sikhs are the ones emotionally invested in 84 genocide.

Congress vote bank has been hindus sc and obc. (Sikh or hindu).

Historically jatt sikhs have been with sad (most of them). But arrival of aap and soft khakistanis like amritpal have splintered that.

I also think congress will form gov next time. Neither Sad nor bjp will cross 20% of vote. Aap will face issues with incumbancy. Wont be surprised if congress wins with 30% of the vote.

Raja warring or bajwa might be cm. Bjp and sad can combine. But even that is not a smooth alliance as their vote banks dont trust each other. Sad governance 2012 to 2017 left a lot to be desired. Plus many akali voters might prefer likes of amritpal over voting bjp. This alliance will max get 30% of vote.

"Of all students, Sikh children studying at foundational level — pre-primary to Class II in age group of 3-8 years — are an estimated 49%, which is 8.68% lower than the Sikh population of 57.69% in Punjab in the 2011 Census.

In Punjab, enrolment of students belonging to minority groups in secondary level (Class IX to XII, covering 14-18 years) is 60.3%; in middle level (Class VI-VIII, covering 11-14 years) is 58.3%; in preparatory level (Class III-V, covering 8-11 years) is 56.2%; and in foundational level (Class Pre-primary to II, covering 3-8 years) is 54.3%.

Among Muslims in Punjab, enrolment in secondary level is 2.1%; in middle level 2.6%; in preparatory 3.2% and in foundational 3.4%."

https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/chandigarh/impact-of-emigration-in-punjab-school-data-shows-shift-in-demography/articleshow/118741267.cms

Actually this 54.3% is all minorities , sikhs are 49%, muslims 3.4%, Christian etc are the rest. So the Hindus should be 45.7%

You can see that in 14-18 age group, Sikh kids are 60-3=57%

In 3-8 age group, Sikh kids are 49%. So are 800 bps reduction in 10 years. Or arnd 80 bps every year.

If trends don't change Sikh kids enrollments in 3-8 yr bracket will be below 40% of the total in abt a decade.

The victims of 1984 were Delhi's Sikhs who are mostly Khatri Sikhs. They are the most peace-loving, law abiding, financially well off, nation loving people. They have very little to do with Punjab and nothing to with Khalistan. Congress mobs simply chose the easiest target, without thinking anything.

The support for Khalistan is found exclusively in Jatt caste in Punjab.(Not saying all the Jatts are like that, there have been some very patriotic Jatt Sikhs as well like KPS Gill). For these Khalistanis Delhi's Sikhs are as good or bad as Hindus. They don't give a damn. All they care about is their political clout in Punjab.

In fact, when Sikhs all around India ask these Khalistani seperatist leaders that why do you trouble Hindus in Punjab, why don't you think of Sikhs in all over India, what will happen to them/their businesses if Hindus start retaliating against Sikhs outside Punjab. KHALISTANIS simply answer that they can abandon everything and come to Punjab if they want.

Which is why Jatts of Punjab will happily vote for Congress. Because they see a Hindu nationalist BJP/RSS as a bigger threat to them than Congress.

But seriously.

Has Congress done exceptional development in Punjab that you and the @Lone Wolf keep supporting them even after they made Punjab state a living hell in the 80s and early 90s?

Beggars cant be choosers.

There are literally zero able cadre in BJP in Punjab. They are stuck with Congress, AAP, SAD.

Same situation is in Bihar, people love Modi there but the state cadre of BJP is incompetent and full of morons.

Groom someone like Yogi or Hemanta in these 2 states and BJP will continue to be in power.

BJP as a party is not unlike the cong. It has better leaders who are currently in the spotlight. You take away Modi/Yogi/Biswas and a few others and it's the same as Cong. Still they are less harmful than the opposition because they don't do muslim appeasement (for now)

Hey btw - how are things for you folks in the US?

The internet is getting filthy with the Khalistani driver that caused the accident in the US. Don't really care for the Khalistani - but are there any issues on the ground in the US?

I was earlier thinking about sending my son to university in the US, but am seriously reconsidering it now.

Congress mobs used the opportunity to spread violence as a means for the party to stay in power at that time.

Its not different from how the current party used Hindus vs everyone else to stay in power or what happened during the Gujarat riots.

Times change and people need to ask themselves which party better aligns with their goals, you cannot stay married to one party throughout your life.
