Why does India have such a poor ODI record in Australia against the hosts?

We might even have won 1977-78 series there but wouldn't have been memorable because we were up against a severely depleted Aussie team led be 42 yo Simpson who had come out of retirement for that series. 

 

We have a very good CV when it comes to tests in Australia. 20-21 BGT took it to another level.

Yup that 2007 series would've been extremely close where blind & deaf Bucknor couldn't see or hear Symonds edge (more like deflection) which changed the match followed by Aussies appealing and giving batters out by the time 4th innings rolled in.

 

Would've won in 2004 as well if we had a better wk than Parthiv Patel. That useless twit missed 6 chances in the final Test at SCG. We would've won the series with a more competent wk.

The umpires used to be trigger happy raising their fingers even if the nick came off from helmets or thigh pads. Anglo umpires have always been the biggest scum and they still look after each other's chances.

I would make an exception for Eng umpires. They were the best of the lot and didn't make intentional mistakes the way Aussie ones did like giving Tendulkar Shoulder Before Wkt.

This is the key , grooming batting AR, not bits of pieces , or bowlers who can bat. I think Washington could be a good ODI AR but most certainly not at no 7 or 8

Post 2013, ageing stars like Dhoni blamed our losses on the lack of a genuine 5th bowling option when he should have been upping his flagging strike rate.

 

I already posted elsewhere, Australia won the 2015 World Cup in the 2 new ball era with Maxwell and Shane Watson as their 5th and 6th bowlers

 

Maxwell averaged 36 at 5.73 economy. 

Watson averages 85 at 6.57 economy 

 

Indian fans' and analysts' brains would explode if India's 5th and 6th bowlers had such numbers.

 

It's amazing how all and sundry are impressed by Australia's multi-generational ODI dominance but  rarely tried to copy their template ourselves.

Decent batsman. OK bowler. Can power hit. Clutch.

Yup. Bowling is overrated in white ball. Aussies know that hence their 5th-6th option is always weaker.

 

In white ball you don't need to take wickets, just stall runs. Good field settings and game plans (matchups - offie to leftie/sla to rightie, being introduced when batting team is under pressure so can get some cheap overs in etc) can do that.

 

Of course all rounders will always give up more runs on average than a bowler but will more than make up for it in batting.
