You just need a bit of intelligence in T20 if you don't have mystery. Remember when Sundar was attacked he had no clue where to bowl. But today BRevis gave room Santner and Rachin bowled beyond his reach. All these things don't happen by accident. They come with plan and execute.

But someone like Riyan or even Krunal will go for around the same amount of runs, or slightly more, but will show up in the other 2 disciplines - batting and fielding. Important to have players who're multi-skilled and I really miss folks like Raina, Yuvraj, Sehwag etc. who could roll their arms over and give you a few overs. Dhoni always went with such multi-skilled individuals and made them bowl. We went away from that approach under Kohli and ended up a decade without a trophy.

I would always have him in my squad and he's the logical replacement for Axar, and not Sundar. Parag is another one who would be a good fit, and I expect Vipraj Nigam to play the role of a bowling all-rounder as well pretty soon. And if you add Jaiswal and Suryavanshi to the mix instead of going back to Gill, we've a pretty strong group.

We need spin bashers up the order as well to counter these weird strategies. tapandrun 1

He was injured so picking him would have been bit tricky specially when he had not played intnl cricket for some time. They could have tried Nigam in place of sundar, he can also hit few 4/6 down the order. Is a leg spinner gives the variety Ultimate_Game 1

Even in this game NZ bowled McConchie only 1 over that too after getting 2 wkts. If Ind qualifies for Finals he may bowl few more over as Ind has so many LH batters. McConchie was intrduced vs LH batter he got 2 LH batters out his job was done, he won the match-up. Thats why you do not need specialist off-spinners in T20 games

Also right hander tries to over-attack ( to throw opposition off guard) and persishes (Rohit sharma bloody did that in One day final) or goes ultra-defensive and gets out (being afraid of getting out). This is where you need touch players someone who just reacts to the ball.

This is where you need touch players someone who just reacts to the ball. Off-spinner bowling to Rh batter is a pure punt and trying to take on batter's ego. But not if a leg-spinner/Sla bowling to Rh batter in this case its a +ive match up in favour of the bowler. If as a team you are going to take a punt and going to bowl 1-2 over why have a specialist/fulltime off-spinner, this can be done by developing an off-spinner frm one of the specialist batter which most of the top teams are doing, they bowl such bowlers when they are taking a punt or just have +ive match up. In t20 cricket specially in last 2 years its no longer getting 1 boundary per over, batters tries to ensure 2 boundaries/over and a 3rd boundary can get you more momentum. Multiple teams these days have batters who can get 15+ runs in 1 over, there are some batter who can get 20 or more , these over kinds of break the game in your favour.

They had a wonderful opportunity to experiment and give chances to fringe players and they wasted all that time on Gill and Sundar when nearly everyone other than our selectors and Gambhir could see that they weren't fit for T20s.
