Well apart from the Indian T20 stars, who won back to back T20 WC, the global stars have been declining in numbers rapidly. If you could just take a look at the mid international teams first, they have just one or two players worthy of calling them T20 star or featuring in IPL just on the basis of their T20 reputations. SENA+ WI have multiple stars for sure but comparing to their previous generation, they too have been fading.

Mid Teams
Pak- Abrar is good, Farhan due to current form & Tariq for novelty. That's about it.
SL- Nissaka is SL no.1 star and maybe injury prone Patheerana & Hasranga.

BD- Mustafuzir
AFG- Gurbaz(unsold in IPL 2026) & Rashid(fast declining) and Noor (not impressive)

ZIM- Raza ( preferred PSL over IPL, 39 age) & Muzarbani(not sure if he is IPL level)

SENA+ WI

SA- Currently the hottest T20 stars factory. Rickelton, Markaram, Brevis, Klassan( retired), DeCock( faded), Miller, Stubbs, Burger, Jansen, Ngidi, Rabada

Eng- Not elite anymore- Salt, Bethell, Butler(declined) Brook(banned from IPL), Jacks, Curran, Archer

NZ- The usual suspects- Allen, Seifert, Phillips, Santner, Boult( fading), Henry, Ferguson, Chapman(PSL)

AUS- The declining T20 team- Marsh, Head, Connoly(upcoming), Inglis, David, Stoinis( retired), Maxwell(declined & dropped), Zampa(PSL), Ellis, Bartlett, Cummins(injury prone), Hazelwood(injury prone), Starc(work load management)

WI- Too few global T20 stars now- Pooran(retired), Hetmyer, Rutherford, Shephard, Akeil, Narine( declining)

T20 cricket has changed alot , alot of player who were considered superstrs/star in cricket have retired and that has kind of unlocked a new level of t20 batting.

As there are v.few to 0 multi-format players it would take some time fr fans/viewers to realize it and hence for some time there will be no superstar in true sense for sometime.

To be fair non-sena teams never had a true t20 batter or a star.

In IPl  Aus+WI players were most sought after and then once eng changed white-ball cricket some eng crkt started gaining traction but not many succeeded only butller stood the test of the time , morgan, roy, baristrow etc were excellent in Intnl level but never got going in ipls.

So Aus occupied key pos at the top of the order and WI player were main stay of middle order or lower middle order for IPL team.

But soon as Impact-sub rules came in IPL teams have been bit more adventurous and gave chances to new domestic Ind players and some of them have taken the game to next level -- Arya, prab, Viabhav, Abhishek are the example of it. Teams are looking for more such domestic batters in the top order.

These batters are playing t20 at next level, so much so some1 facing 11 balls in pp got the player of the match award. Those teams who do not have such players are looking ordinary batting line-ups compare to teams with these batters.

Now that opening slots are occupied by new domestic t20 batter that leaves to middle order pos. and there are not many names who one can say are true stars. Only players like pooran, Klasen , may be miller are true middle order star and now fast emerging brevis. so just 4/5 batters can add maxwell to it as well.

game has changed a lot, anchors who were considered stars because of performances in other formats have retired and that role is re-evaluated and most teams are realizing accumulator was holding them back. Then emergence of domestic players , so there are no big names as such right now.

So main points ::

  • Anchor who were good in all 3 formats were considered a star but now most of them have retired and teams re-evaluating such role and finding out they might be scoring 15-20 runs less.
  • Emergence of domestic openers so no need for Intnl stars at the pos.
  • Its been only couple of yrs. for superstars to retire it will take sometime for other players to gain that status
  • Not many point of diff middle order batters right now in t20i cricket
  • Star bowlers are still the mystery/wrist spinners and same group of pacers who have been there for sometime no new bowler has not even challenged them -- Rabada,Nortje, lungi, Strac, hazelwood, cummins, Bhumrah, Siraj, Shami, Archer, Wood(but he is hardly available due to injuried), boult
  • Emergence of Nz players in white-ball and the teams consistency but they are looked as superstars but collectively they are effective

So if you are ipl team here is the list of os players/stars one aim to bring in their teams:

Openers--Allen, head, Seifert, butller, salt, Marsh (due to exp and he still is v.good)

Middle order-- Kalsen, Bravis, Miller.maxwell, Brevis, pooran, rutherford and hetmyer

There is one lower middle order batter -- Tim david

Already mentioned about the bowler.

As there are not many t20 lower middle order batters even in intnls, smart IPL teams are trying out Ind domestic players, yes some will not be able to make it or are not ipl level but teams are looking for and even if they find 1-2 they can push them into Ind side in no time.

Srh-- Aniket

Lsg-- Mukul

Csk--Veer, Karthik

Interesting observation. Quite comprehensive. :clap2:

But generally, international teams have lost stars but not replaced it quickly, as of now.

WI used to have Gayle, Bravo, Russell, Narine, Holder, Pooran, Mayers, Lewis etc. But now most of them are gone and few are past their peak. Now we have players like Shephard, Akeal or Rutherford type who doesn't have an aura of global T20 stars.

Same with England- Butler, Bairstow, Stokes etc. are all gone. The type of players that bring in crowd. Now we have Salt ( hit or miss), Bethell( emerging ), Brooks(banned as of now) and Archer. The star quality is severaly diminshed.

NZ and SA have been able to maintain the quality with new exciting T20 players.

Aus is a curious case. They have not been able to bring in new T20 superstars lately apart from David & Inglis. They are still relying on Marsh, Head, Maxwell, Stonis, Cummins, Zampa, Hazelwood, Starc.

Overall, there is a dearth of quality T20 crickters in the world right now excluding India and SA.

Not shrinkign technically. Just that old guards are in need of replacement. Last generation T20 stars are more less disappearing slowly. Most of the guys are going to be new. India meanwhile has significantly surged ahead that India is far far superior to any other T20 team in the world. Due to bench strength India seamlessly transitioned in T20. Other teams struggle.

Again names mentioned above were playing multiple formats, t20 specific players are not considered stars and that too after viewers realizing most of bilateral Lois are not full strength side, so even if some1 scores any runs it hardly matters. Now only place to build stardom in white-ball in either in IPL or ICC events, rest other t20 leagues hardly matters

Right now players who are doing well across multiple formats are considered stars. ex-

Eng-- Root,Butller, Stokes, Brooks(he is yet to figure out white-ball), Bethell

SA--Rabada,Nortje, Miller,Brevis (rt. not mostly because he is baby ab)

Ind -- Still Rohit, Kolhi, Bhumrah( amongst who understand wht fast bowling brings), Pandaya (he tries to be a star)

Aus-- The trio of fast bowling, Head and Smith

WI-- Their top players hardly plays intnl cricket but Pooran

Pak-- Rizwan , babar, shaheen

NZ-- not many associate Nz players with stardom by default though they are v.good players. Only williamson is seen as proper star may be bout too

The thing is t20 specialist batters are not considered proper batters , they do not pass the eye-test are not elegant at stroke making. And mostly are looked as tullas or hecks by viewers and experts.Historically if some1 does nt look good on eye-test was never mentioned about becoming greats or the game, and for bowler in t20s becoming a superstar is next to impossible specially the new-one you need a lot of time to just learn how to bowl dots and let batters score in singles, once some bowler comes across poper t20 batter they donot even knw where to bowl to them , t20 batters are that good, and for some1 new to Ipl to t20is is v.diifficut

Wasn't this the point that Indian T20 stars to be better than foreign counterparts in times to come?

India is just too good a T20 team.

Apart from Fast bowling where they tend to score on us I think we have surged ahead. In 4-5 years time even that would be overtaken.

We have to bring back CL T20 once again I think in a couple of year's time.

The list you have presented is basically all format stars ( most of them ATG ) from last 10-15 years. Fair enough but this is easy to list out though. There were players outside this list that warranted high demand in IPL. Someone like Morgan, Russell, Klassan, Narine, Maxwell, FAF, Albie Morkel and many others. Not all were all format players but lend tremedous quality to their T20 team.

Fast forwared to 2026, the landscape is changed now. T20 is taking over as the main cricket show in ICC events or leagues. Specialsts T20 players are no less stars. Think of Abhishek or Tim David. They may be tulla but better than Gill or Babar in T20s.  Indian T20 is at all time high but at the same time the international stars are dimnishing. But maybe this is just the current phase and new global stars will eventually emerge.

Clearly shows why CSK, KKR SRH and even MI to a certain extent are struggling. They have ~3 players in red in the above list
