One wish for Yuvi when he plays the 2 Ms

DONT PLAY THAT GOD DAMM SWEEP SHOT OF YOURS!
Nonsense. The sweep, if played well, is a mighty effective shot against the spinners. Especially, since its blatantly obvious that just offering the straight face of the bat to Mendis isnt going to cut ( we have seen how batsman are invariably either bowled or lbw, if they just offer the vertical face of the bat in reponse to his subtle spin), Yuvraj's best chance of survival is to get the sweep-shot out as often as possible and hope it comes off.

Have you seen yuvraj play? The sweep is a good shot but the amount of times yuvi has got out playing it is rridiculous. He plays it out of desperation not calculation hence my call not to play it. As frankly he does not play it very well, actually he plays it shockingly badly

Did you read what you just wrote? If he plays straight with the full face of the bat ... he will get bowled ... but if he looks to play a high-risk cross bat shot ... thats his best chance for survival? Remember Karthik tried that shot against Murali in the 1st test and lobbed it straight to mid on. If Yuvraj pulls it off , he has to hope that it dents the confidence of M&M so much so that they lose control of their line and length ... because if you can not play a variety of shots against spin bowling (particularly straight down the ground) you get undone sooner rather than later.

But Lara always had a second line of defence. How many times we've seen him dancing down the track and if he finds not being up to the pitch of the ball, negotiating it wonderfully with a very tight defence of bat and whole body together. Yuvi won't be able to do that quick and precise adjustments against a bowler like Mendis...he'll concentrate more on premeditated shots.

True ... Im just saying that the backlift is not his main problem ... its that when he drives the ball he doesnt drive back straight lead through with his top hand meaning unless he times it perfectly its gonna be a crap shot ... thats why that sweep he plays usually results in a couple of boundaries before he mistimes it

from cricinfo regarding todays innings In the mean time, Yuvraj had settled in. Crucially, he looked confident against spin - he hit Malinda Warnapura for a six in his solitary over - and his flicks across the line were all power and precision. He stood tall to punch the shorter deliveries through the in-field and his bent-knee while driving down the ground was pleasing. Yuvraj blasted sixes off the first two balls of Thilan Thushara's comeback over, the 36th, moving past fifty with the first. A whip over mid-on followed, and Yuvraj then trained his ire towards Bandara, striking his fourth six. His century came off 95 balls and that was enough for Yuvraj to have a bit of fun. In 16 balls, he raced past 150, pasting Mubarak for three more sixes and a four in his final over and hitting his ninth and tenth sixes, both effortless swings over long-on, off a beleaguered Chanaka Welegedara. Yuvraj's final six was the pick of the lot, a stunning shot over extra-cover which nearly took out the press cordon. Yuvraj's partners went unnoticed during his blitz, but they played their part in India putting up a mammoth total. Rohit Sharma scored a 42-ball 24 in an 85-run fourth-wicket stand, while Mahendra Singh Dhoni's contribution to a 99-run stand, which came in just 6.4 overs, was a mere 16. ok M&M weren't there, but good signs, right?

No, I was very clear in what I was saying. If Yuvraj waits on the backfoot and hopes to read Mendis off the pitch, he is toast. Thats how unplayable Mendis is, with his pace and two-way spin. Yuvraj's best shot at a) survival and b) scoring is to get out the sweep shot as often as possible, so that Mendis line/length is unsettled. But keep in mind, Yuvraj has to sweep off length and not line or turn. If he thinks the ball is within his range, whether its outside off or leg, off-spin of flipper, he just has to get down on his knees and sweep. Karthik's shot was more of an across-the-line mow over mid-wicket. It wasnt exactly a sweep.

Sri' date=' how much you talk about the technical aspects of Yuvraj's sweep,m damn sure that every third sweep will be a top edged one and thus he's minimizing his chances of survival.[/quote'] Of course, the risk quotient is higher with the shot, but so is the dividend if it comes off. As always with anything in life, higher the risk, higher the reward! :D Someone has to take it upon himself to unsettle Mendis. You cant just allow him to start his spell, settle down and weave his magic. But mind you, is anyone in the Indian team capable of doing that, we dont know yet. From the evidence that we have so far, the answer seems a 'no'. ODIs are a slightly different ball game. It only takes a bowler, however good he is, to go for runs in 2,3 overs for his confidence to drop and the positive feeling in the batting line-up to surge.

Quite true MM. A classic example of the effectiveness of sweep against spin is India vs Englad in WC 1987 in Bombay. Graham Gooch killed the Indian spinners in our own backyard with the sweep shot. The guy had hired local spinners just to practice that shot and on the day it paid off. Though Gooch fell to Manindar singh finally, he had done the damage by then.
