Desi Cartman
CHENNAI: Plans are afoot to bowl out Melbourne and Eden Garden cricket stadiums. The world's largest cricket stadium is all set to come up near Chennai in time for World Cup 2011, which India will co-host with Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. The executive committee of the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association will finalize the contractor to build the "ultra modern cricket stadium" on a 50-acre site in Karunkuzhipallam village in Kanchipuram district, 25km from the city. The stadium's name will be announced by the association after consultation with the state government. The highlight of the stadium, besides the size and seating capacity, will be a retractable roof to ensure matches don't get washed out during rain. TNCA president N Srinivasan said the stadium would be on a par with world standards. "The government has leased out the land to us for 30 years and we have remitted Rs 1 lakh as payment. TNCA executive committee will meet on Thursday to discuss plans, including awarding of construction contract," Srinivasan told TOI . The stadium complex will occupy 30 acres. "The stadium will have more seating capacity than Eden Gardens or the Melbourne Cricket Ground, though we can't give an exact number at this stage. It will meet futuristic safety standards," said TNCA honorary secretary KS Viswanathan. Melbourne has a seating capacity of close to 1 lakh, while Eden Gardens can accommodate up to 90,000 spectators. The rest of the area will be used for two smaller fields for research and training, besides rehabilitation. Link to comment

Predator_05
It's about time India moved away from the large and lifeless concrete block stadiums. Mumbai already has a top class stadium in DY Patil and now we'll get another one here in Chennai. Good stuff. I don't know if retractable roofs are a good idea though Link to comment
flamy
This is awesome. And why arent retractable roofs a good idea? There's one in Aus innit? Link to comment
cowboysfan
I said something similar to this(a better stadium than eden )to be built in Bangalore and you guys laughed at the idea -I hope this is true and they can complete it by 2011 but its going to be expensive-especially with the roof).the new cowboys stadium(which will seat upto 100,000 also has a retractable roof and it costs upto $1 BILLION dollars.lets say it will cost a 1/10th of that in india and it will still be $100 million. hope the new chennai superkings IPL franchise is also paying part of the bill. Desi Cartman
This is awesome. And why arent retractable roofs a good idea? There's one in Aus innit? yes its called Telstra dome .. The problems are no wind , its very difficult to have a good grass cover. I think its a good idea Link to comment
cowboysfan
telstra dome is a closed roof but the one in chennai will be a retractable roof-Now that i think about it the retractable roof(if its built) will have to be be largest of its kind by a big margin. Link to comment

SachDan
Great news for Chennai crowd. so many matches were washed out just when it looked like heading for a nice finish. Link to comment
Kartikey
Oh boy, thats awesome. But I can imagine the stuck up Englishmen going, why does there need to be a roof because if it rains let the players go off because of tradition. Link to comment
