Dhawal Kulkarni has not even a FC game under his belt and they put him in the squad? On what basis? On his IPL performances?! Please don't say on his U19 performances?!
If Virat Kohli can be chosen to the national squad on the back of just U-19 performance I won't be surprised at all to know that Kulkarni made it to the A squad on the back of his U-19 performance too. Looks like selectors have really jumbled up minds where they are unable to make correct selections!

The team will play two one-dayers and a three-day game, starting September 3, against a Queensland XI in Brisbane before departing for India. The second leg of the tour includes a one-day tri-series also featuring Australia A, and two first-class matches against the hosts. The squad features internationals like Peter Fulton, James Marshall and Michael Mason, as well as those from the Emerging Players side which beat Australia in the tournament finals recently, like seamer Trent Boult, BJ Watling and Martin Guptill. The team will be coached by Mike Hesson of Otago and managed by Glenn Turner, the former New Zealand captain. Jeetan Patel and Mark Gillespie have been selected for the tri-series alone but they will be replaced by Iain O'Brien and Boult for the four-day games. "We have taken the opportunity to assemble a team of emerging talent and players who will benefit from the experience of touring and playing in Australia and India," John Bracewell, the New Zealand senior team coach, said. "The tour is helping to build the experience of these players and is part of a programme to build greater depth at the international level." Hyderabad and Chennai will host the tri-series, which ends on September 26. New Zealand will stay back in Chennai for the two four-day matches starting September 28 at the Guru Nanak College grounds. The MA Chidambaram Stadium will host the final match, starting October 3.

India A opener Shikhar Dhawan' date=' who hurt his thumb at nets, is effectively being ruled out of the upcoming series against Australia A, reports [b']Arjun Sen. More...
Injured Dhawan to miss A team series Arjun Sen, Hindustan Times New Delhi, August 28, 2008 First Published: 23:56 IST(28/8/2008) Last Updated: 23:59 IST(28/8/2008) India A opener Shikhar Dhawan hurt his thumb at nets on Thursday, effectively being ruled out of the upcoming series against Australia A. Dhawan was facing up to a bowling machine when he was struck on the hand. With initial scans revealing a hairline fracture, Dhawan will be out of action for at least a couple of weeks. Speaking from Bangalore, a dejected Dhawan said: "It is very unfortunate. I was facing the bowling machine when one just kicked up and hit me smack on the hand." It has been a breakthrough season for Dhawan, with the southpaw scoring a heap of runs, first for Delhi in Ranji Trophy, and then, for the Delhi IPL team. Those performances earned him a call-up to the Emerging Players meet in Australia, where he finished as India's best batsman by a distance. And while many had tipped him to make it to the national team after Tendulkar pulled out of the Lanka series, Dhawan was pipped to the post by his Delhi teammate Virat Kohli. This series against Australia A was a perfect opportunity for Dhawan to stake a claim for a place in the team. Dhawan will now have to wait for the domestic season to send the selectors a reminder. As far as naming a replacement for Dhawan, national selector, Bhupinder Singh Sr told HT that as of now no replacements had been discussed. "We have just learnt about Dhawan's injury and will get together and pick a replacement in the coming days, if we feel the need for one," he said. Meanwhile, BCCI secretary Niranjan Shah said since it was a 15-member squad, it wasn't imperative to call up a replacement. "We have enough fit players," he said. __________ Oh my god! Who'll be our opener now against Australia A? Will it be Akash Chopra?

Tait launches comeback via Australia A Shaun Tait will make his return to competitive cricket on Australia A's one-day tour of India next month after walking away from the game in January. More... Australia A in India 2008-09 Tait launches comeback via Australia A Cricinfo staff August 29, 2008 325262.jpgShaun Tait is ready to take the field again after seven months away from cricket © Getty Images Shaun Tait will make his return to competitive cricket on Australia A's one-day tour of India next month after walking away from the game in January. It is the strongest indication yet that Tait will be in the mix for national selection this season following his decision to take time off due to mental and physical exhaustion. He has been named as one of four players to join the Australia A squad for the limited-overs portion of the trip, which involves a three-team tournament also featuring India A and New Zealand A. Tait took part in Australia's training camp in Brisbane last week but he knows stepping up to international level will take some time. "I am looking forward to playing again," Tait said. "I have had a relaxed off-season, am feeling good and am enjoying rolling my arm over in the nets. I am not expecting huge things but it is a great opportunity and it will feel good to be back on the field." His comeback was anything but certain in January, when he quit cricket indefinitely following a disappointing return to the Test side and a frustrating run with injuries. The selectors will be keen to give him plenty of match practice before considering him for the national team. "It is very exciting that Shaun Tait is resuming his international career after a break from the game," Andrew Hilditch, the chairman of selectors, said. "He has been training extremely well at the recent player camp in Brisbane and is fully aware of the opportunity this one-day tour provides." Cameron White will captain the limited-overs team and will be joined by Brett Geeves, who like White is in the ODI squad currently in Darwin, and the Tasmania spinner Xavier Doherty. Simon Katich, who is leading Australia A in their three-day games, will not take part in the one-dayers. The spin trio of Beau Casson, Bryce McGain and Jason Krejza will also return home after they press their claims for a spot in Australia's Test squad to visit India in October. McGain was the equal leading wicket taker in the FR Cup in 2007-08 but Doherty, who was also at the head of the list, was preferred for his left-arm variety. "The national selection panel was also keen to have a look at a left-arm orthodox spinner in the one-day makeup and Xavier Doherty is someone that has impressed at interstate level during recent times," Hilditch said. "We look forward to seeing how he performs in the sub-continent."

Kohli replaces Dhawan in India A squad Virat Kohli, the batsman who made his India ODI debut this month, will replace Shikhar Dhawan, the Delhi batsman, in the India A team for the 'Test' series against Australia A starting in Bangalore on September 3, Niranjan Shah, the BCCI secretary, has confirmed. More... Australia A in India 2008-09 Kohli replaces Dhawan in India A squad Cricinfo staff August 29, 2008 Laxman at NCA VVS Laxman had his ankle injury assessed at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bangalore on Friday and will continue to follow a rehabilitation programme that has been put in place by Nitin Patel, the physio with the Indian team in Sri Lanka. Laxman injured his left ankle during the third Test against Sri Lanka in Colombo early this month. Virat Kohli, the batsman who made his India ODI debut this month, will replace Shikhar Dhawan, the Delhi batsman, in the India A team for the 'Test' series against Australia A starting in Bangalore on September 3, Niranjan Shah, the BCCI secretary, has confirmed. Dhawan has been ruled out due to a thumb injury he sustained at practice, Shah said. A national selector told Cricinfo that the selection panel decided to give Kohli, the captain of India's World Cup-winning Under-19 team, more cricketing action as the Champions Trophy, for which he had been named in the Indian team, had been postponed. Kohli, 19, earned his national call-up after a good run in the recently-concluded Emerging Players Tournament in Australia. He has opened for India in the one-dayers against Sri Lanka, scoring 128 runs from four matches, with a highest score of 54. S Badrinath leads the India A team, which also includes internationals like Robin Uthappa and Sreesanth, who are looking to stage a comeback into the national side. Meanwhile, the India A preparatory camp for the three-match series started at Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore on Friday under the supervision of Dav Whatmore, the director of operations at the National Cricket Academy (NCA). The Indian camp is scheduled to run till September 2 while the Australia A side is expected to arrive later on Friday.

^ Yea ... Chopra performed very well in the Duleep Trophy last summer. He has been consistently good for a few years now. He even made a 82 ball hundred ... showing he is now developing a more attacking game too. He at least deserves the chance over Kohli, who hasnt paid his dues in the domestic circuit yet.

Why is that a problem? Michael Hussey made his debut at 30. Justin Langer made his return to the team at age 30 aswell' date=' from memory. I think same with Hayden. For Test cricket 30 is not too old at all. Most guys play Tests till about 36/37.[/quote'] Different countries and different criteria. Though I think it is absolutely wrong to bring age in as a factor in selection, especially of batsmen in tests, you just can't help it. I just don't understand that why on earth the selectors don't want to give a chance to these fellows? Maybe they think he is not brilliant enough to last long? Maybe they do not give much credit to Ranji performance where you just have to face extremely mediocre bowlers? Maybe Akash never succeeded spectacularly when everyone was watching, like Challengers or even IPL (though how can you even equate a one day or twenty20 performance for tests is beyond me)? How on earth can Kohli be selected for unofficial tests vs Aus A? What on earth has he done in FC cricket? But I think it doesn't matter. There certainly are different criteria which we are unaware of. I wish someone makes it public!
