The Higgs boson is the proverbial God Particle, though it is notable, that none of the physicists will address it as such. The Higgs boson is considered to be the conduit of gravitational energy, the all pervading energy that while is the weakest fundamental force when juxtaposed with magnetic, electric and nuclear forces, it does however, act upon very large distances. Now, here is what all the crap about the law suite comes from: somehow somewhere an asswipe thinks that the collider will produce a miniature blackhole which will in turn, swallow up this entire earth. nothing but an attention seeking **** who thinks that he might manage an out of court settlement from his tactics. ignore all this crap and brace yourself for humanity's greatest scientific experiment.

vroomfondel Posted September 8, 2008 Posted September 8, 2008 a few MeV is an understatement, about a billion MeV. and there is a prediction of micro black holes being created by proton-proton collisions at 14 TeV or higher. These are supposed to decay via hawking radiation. They will never do anything to the earth because: 1. This happens all the time already, with cosmic rays with energies near 10^20 eV. The universe has already conducted about 10^31 LHC experiments without us being destroyed. That's a big number. 10 Trillion experiments per second, over the life of the universe and we're still here. (and I mean each try = the total number of collisions that the LHC will ever produce. ie. 1 lifetime of the LHC). 2. It's unstable and will have very short lifetime, and will emit hawking radiation. 3. It's got really small mass, nothing like the supermassive black holes in teh center of the galaxy. Please do share - thanks ! atomic bomb = few hundred MeV, and the amount of energy released is large because it's a chain reaction. ie,one reaction will seed a couple of others. you're probing the nuclear shell model, ie. how neutrons and protons are arranged in the nucleus. this is why stars radiate etc. and how heavy elements were formed. lhc, much higher energy: is looking for a break in symmetry much earlier in time of universe. ie, much closer to the big bang. way before stars etc. it is probing what is holding protons together. there is an overlap. the energy scales are very different.

Please do share - thanks ! atomic bomb is a runaway nuclear reaction... either fission or fusion. the former involves heavier, unstable nuclei of isotopes deteriorating into smaller, more stable ones, that then again deteriorate till you have lead or lower nuclei where radioactivity is not very prevalent, whereas fusion is the combination of two otherwise naturally occurring nuclei into a heavier nuclei. both processes are exothermic, whereas fusion is a good 100000 times more energetic when equal masses of reactants are considered. a particle accelerator uses Lorentz force which dictates that a moving, charged object in a magnetic field experiences a force vector, to accelerate charged particles such as protons (as in the LHC) or electrons. the particle accelerator is not a runaway reaction, well there is no reaction, and it involves considerable energy investment. basically you take protons and then subject them to a magnetic field. as a result they are deflected in a direction perpendicular to their original path and the magnetic field... then you apply a second magentic field a little further down the line and accelerate them even more... and then using small tweaks in magnetic fields, you accelerate the proton around in a circle, faster and faster till you reach relativistic speeds (speeds approaching the speed of light). in the LHC, these protons are eventually collided with each other and for the briefest of times, they form a heavier particle (speculation)... this heavier particle is sought by scientists who are seeking to fill the gaps in the theory of gravitation: the least understood of all naturally occurring forces. i will post some pictures from LHC when my professor visits the place this week.

Thanks THX for your answers - I had a few more questions Why is this built inside a tunnel 100 or so meters below the ground? How many protons would there be at any given time in the ring? and how would the magnets that accelarate these protons be controlled ? [The more the protons, the higher their radition is going to be, so it'd be interesting to understand how radiation is going to be controlled.]. How do the plan on studying the momentary collision phenomenon ? i.e. how do they acquire data/photographs? If you have any links could you provide those? [i'll google these as well].
