Why should be given the boot? just because she believes in Islam ? I mean what if an Indian Muslim refuses to say it ? or what if a Hindu refuses to say allah-hu-akbar on TV ... religion is a personal thing , its stupid to make it a team's slogan
Once Again................... There is a 50% chance that you will have to say a Hindu religious slogan in the show. Is it absurd..sure, I am not much in favor of sacred slogans being paraded out like this. BUT, these are the rules, and this information is already KNOWN to a prospective participant upon trying out for the show. SO....if a Muslim individual knows that she/he will be expected to say it (50% chance since Shanker/Himesh have the Hindu slogans) if she/he makes the team, then this person should make a decision beforehand -> either go on and say the slogan or drop out b/c of your "religious problem." Simple. ---------- PS - marirs..stop closing so many threads..:giggle:

I understand your point of view that the contestants knew about this , if she did and still chose to participate then she doesn't have a right to complain. Producers should keep religion and entertainment separate

See that is what I have issues with, and I dare say any half-sane viewer will have issue with. Where does it state that there is 50% chance of a Hindu religious slogan?? It is just that some wacko in his infinite wisdom decided to give a religious slogan so as to rally the team/contestant. I used to squirm in my seat anytime I saw Ismail Darbar say - Yalgaar Ho. But atleast I found that hilarious and not upsetting. However I am sure many non-Hindus may find Har Har Mahadev not so acceptable. Also Har Har Mahadev is VERY Hindu in religion. I am surprised to see many Hindus dismissing it as nothing big, maybe they should learn more about this. To a Shiv-bhakt there is nothing more important than Har Har Mahadev, not to mention many Indian Armed brigade actually use it as a battle cry. Would a Indian Hindu want to utter a line that is used by Pakistani Army when they attack India?? If no then double standards and all that jazz? xxx

I am surprised you say that CA. In my own personal experience I am yet to meet a Pakistani person who claims "We have a better culture". Sure many Pakistanis follow a certain way of life(read wearing full sleeves) and are not comfortable with wearing skimpy clothes. Fair enough. So whats wrong in saying that?? Whats the hurry to jump the gun and start making judgements on what she meant, and what have you? I am still to hear one sane argument(within this thread) where the girl has actually said anything on the lines of what many people are suggesting. This is a classic case of making a mountain out of molehill. xxx
Well, Lurker, I have met (online) numerous Pakisatnis who believe that they have the best culture in the entire world. But the fact remains that the young Pakistani generations is highly influenced by Indian culture and are adapting Indian ways in life. Indian movies and television defines how they act in their lives. And then there definitely is a group who strongly believe that they have a much better culture and India is only spoiling that culture. But then I will agree that conservative people, irrespective of religion, have always considered themselves better than the comparatively liberal ones. As far as the girl is concerned, I dont see anything particularly wrong in her denial or her statetement. But she should not have been vocal in a way that makes the very program look corrupted. If she believes that the program is that corrupted and she is the one honest, quit it. Go home.

Please read all my posts in this thread. Carefully. Your Pt1: 50% chance of a Hindu slogan ==> Himesh/Shankar have Hindu slogans as their chant. There are four teams. 2 have Hindu slogans. So the Pakistani lady has a 50-50 chance of landing in a team that has a Hindu slogan. She knows this before joining the show. If this is unacceptable to her, then she should have quit. Your Pt2: Hindu slogans in a crappy show like this ===> My earlier comment --> "I am not much in favor of sacred slogans being paraded out like this." Your Pt3: Indian Hindu uttering a Pakistani line ==> As per logic in Pt1, I would NOT attend/participate in a show where in I utterred Pakistani lines/slogans. Simple. Does your post actually have a point? I think NOT.

Wow!!! Just wow at some of the responses in the thread!!! It's no wonder that even Indian Muslims are feeling more and more alienated because even simple things like what a person chooses to wear or not to chant a religious slogan is attached to religion. The girl did nothing wrong at all. She was selected as a singer to participate in a competition and has every right to protest against anything and everything which does not relate directly to her being a singer. Just because she is from Pakistan, she does not have the right to protest about the clothes she is being asked to wear or against the slogans she is being asked to chant without being castigated. WOW!!!

That is the clincher isnt it? Cultural "superiority" is something you will see everyday in India. Although I am vehemently opposed to the partition that divided Bihar and Jharkhand let me also be the first one tell you that many Biharis had this "chip" on their shoulders that it were the Biharis who actually brought "culture" to tribal Jharkhand area. And I am talking of educated people working in Heavy Engineering area that inculcated this thought. But that is surely different from a Nation claiming Cultural superiority. Truth be told these days many Indians suffer from these kind of behaviour whereby any slight criticism of anything Indian means an attack on its culture! xxx

The more I read the responses in this thread the more amazed I am!! We have loonies dishing out some probability numbers at one hand and people talking about Indian culture getting affected by her actions as if they have never criticized any situation they have been in and chosen to leave or are some thekedaars and torchbearers of Indian culture.

What bothers me personally is not that many are criticizing a Pakistani(incidentally it must be intellactually fulfilling to gang up on a year 16 old), but just how far removed Indians are getting from their own culture and traditions. The very bastions they are trying to defend, is also completely un-understood by them. A personal pet peeve of mine is how over the years we have lost the quintessential "Indian-ness" at the occassions of 26th January/15th August. Anytime these occassions are around you will hear the same great songs of 60s/70s; those penned by Kaifi, Sahir, Kavi Pradeep, Indeevar etc. Be it "Aao Bacche tumhein dikhaayein" to "Aaj Himalaya ki chotti se"..these are all songs of yore and NONE of them are in last decade or so. If you look closely many of these songs were written by Muslims and you would easily see the word Vande Mataram laced in between the songs. And even when they didnt write it they had no aversion to it. Today Muslims are getting up in arms when you ask them to sing Vande Matram. Why? Because if they dont then they are traitors!! Because every freaking Tom, Dick and Hari beleives the Muslims of India(and Pakistan) owe them an explanation of sorts, and certainly Indian Muslims need to prove their "patriotism". Jeez! xxx

I agree with that. Reminds me the dialogs from Swadesh. We Indians are in a habit of hiding behind "we have a great cultur" excuse for everything. Its a time of globalization when borders are fast disappearing in many ways. Time to break some barriers. Time to shed some of the old baggage we borrowed from the older generations.

No they don't. Similar argument could be made that every Salim,Saif and Hamid has a victim mentality, playing the minority card, blabbering in the media etc. Infact, one can argue that this whole episode is one of the examples of that.

That is indeed the case. Many Muslims sport the victim mentality even when there is no need as such. No disagreement there. However it is equally true that many Indian Hindus also have this nauseating habit of empty chest thumping and trying to "show" how they are more patriotic than someone else.

why this thread heading towards Indian muslims? this topic is abt this paki contestant who has taken responsibility of being the torchbearer of Islam from pakistan to be on the good side of pakistani public but in reality...pakistani public has overlooked that aspect and has been criticizing her back n forth in the media and in society SIMPLY BECAUSE SHE IS A MUSLIM GIRL REPRESENTING PAKISTAN..... @ lurker: you seem to be very pro muslim these days...what's up? Muslims today have a problem singing Vande Mataram..... I wonder how many madrassah if any plays the national anthem on 15th august.

Well, if basic probability and its associated logic completely eludes you, then your irritation at your own foolishness is understandable. :haha: Actually shwetabh, I'll be honest...her decision to say/not say a slogan in a show is not what rankles us....the fact that a Pakistani is trying to stamp her authority on an Indian show and the fact that is happening at a time when these very same padosis are screwing us over is what is irritating.
