punjabi_khota
This just in: Sourav Ganguly has denied comments attributed to him in a Bengali daily. While several Bengali papers have carried interviews with Ganguly, some controversial comments attributed to him in the Kolkata daily Aajkal deal with his omission from the Indian team and the inclusion of several team-mates. "The reports of an interview from a Bengali daily published in other newspapers are false," Ganguly's statement, read out in the press box by an Indian team official, said. "I have not given such an interview to anyone. I request you to clarify with me before publishing views from other sources." "I have played badly in only one series (in Sri Lanka)," the Aajkal interview said. "Yet every Tom, Dick and Harry is playing in the team. There are players who haven't scored in the last three series for India, even for the last one year. There are some who have changed their hairstyle more than they have scored for India." He said being dropped for the Irani Cup prompted him to call it a day and that he was tired of constantly being made the scapegoat in India's failures. "If there is a gun to your head all the time, how long can you bear this? After all, I have played 400 matches for India," the interview said. His comments have evoked some sharp criticism. Dilip Vengsarkar, the former chairman of the selection which dropped Ganguly for the recent Irani Cup, said Ganguly will get "more than what he asked for", after the series is over. Sunil Gavaskar said Ganguly should not have made these comments ahead of a crucial Test series. http://content-usa.cricinfo.com/indvaus2008/content/current/story/373440.html Link to comment

Shane
Trust If he had to deny it, why would he have said it in the first place Link to comment
DomainK
If he says so. Journalists can not be trusted. Link to comment
Chandan
Now will you people apologise who were cursing Ganguly for those comments? Link to comment
DomainK
I am still very surprised since the denial came very late. Only after Vengsarkar's statement. And what apology? If those comments were made, the criticism was deserved. If he didnt say it, the criticism does not stick. Link to comment
Fontaine
HAhahahaha! If this was coming from Dravid or Kumble it would be believeable. But from a guy who's a media ***** and runs to the public every time there's an issue? Ganguly has used the media far more than any other player. When it came to Greg Chappell, being dropped for the test or ODI teams. Hell even in the IPL Ganguly was crying to media. This guy repeatedly has gone to the papers and print media to complain and air his grieviences for all to see. And now all of a sudden, at the most important part of his career in years, nearing retirement, he claims he gave no such interview? Yeah right. Now, I think what likely happened is the Ganguly spoke OFF the record and the journalist decided to go and print it anway because it was too good to pass up. Initially Ganguly did nothing, it was ONLY after reaction from other heavy hitters like Vengy etc came about that he's since denied making any such comments. What a clown this guy is. Link to comment

yoda
Only reason he has denied it IMO is because Vengsarkar decided to take issue with his statements and he thought he could get in trouble with the BCCI. I don't believe that a Bengali paper is intentionally going to make up a story just to show their own prodigal son in poor light. Link to comment
