I am just following this story. We have known such things happen in the US, but in India its unforeseen. 23 years old Rahul Raj, who came to Mumbai from Patna a week ago opened fire in a BEST bus thereby injuring the conductor. Then he apparently kept firing in the air out of the bus window shouting slogans against Raj Thackray and demanding to talk to the commissionaire. Police shot him dead when he refused to give up his gun. I am not sure, but I think when he was shot dead, he did not have any hostage and he was only firing in the air.

As I see it right now, I see a lot of things wrong. 1. The police really didnt have to kill him. Nitish Kumar says he could have been over powered which I agree with. Or may be a calculated shot at his arm would have disarmed him. Gas was an option. They could have reasoned with him or even wait for him to run out of ammunition since he was only firing in the air. 2. From the footage I see on tv, he did not have any hostages and he kept on gesturing for a phone talk (may be demanding to talk to the commissionaire). I dont think he had any evil schemes. He looked more pitiful than harmful. Shooting how down was entirely unnecessary. 3. The police have already declared him insane without any medical analysis. I think those who decided to kill are more insane than that guy.

An armed guy who is firing shots randomly is bound to be shot down.

well for the safety of other people in the bus, it was rite decision to shoot him.. what if any innocent who was the bus would have been shot by the rifle of that Rahul Raj.. it's insane how people are now questioning the police for shooting that guy

Looking in hindsight, may be an encounter which could have been avoided, however the question remains, what if those random bullets had injured some innocent civilian, well as Dom said a calculated shot may have worked

The way I see it is Mumbai cops had to shoot the guy to make an example out of him. Specially after he had already shot the bus conductor. The last thing Mumbai Police Department wants is to have people walking in streets firing shots in the air. I would also say that Mumbai Police has changed a lot over the years and no longer commands the kind of respect whereby it was thought of as one of the best in the world. Today it is as corrupt as any other State Police Force. Indeed this was the reason that is often cited why cricket betting calls were never nabbed in Mumbai and it was Delhi Police that unearthed the entire scam. Never mind the fact that over half of betting comes from Mumbai/Ahmedabad/Surat area. Could cops have done without shooting? Yes. Did they want to make an example and send out a notice? Yes.

The bus was stationary, vacant and surrounded by police when he was shot down. Was it really necessary to shoot him to death? I dont think so.

At that time, people will be blaming police for not shooting him down. It is always easy to make decisions after the fact.

This was probably the first of this kind experience for the mumbai police and they reacted to save the general public .He had a gun and had shot randomly. He also held the conductor hostage for some time. He kept telling people that he did not want to harm them....but the police didn't want to take a chance. They could have shot him to disable him.. I wouldn't blame mumbai police. They did what they thought was best for the people. But the moronic chest thumping statement of "bullet for bullet " by the state home minister was not on. Now that he has mentioned that he won't stand such goodagardi, lets see him shoot down a few of the MNS goodas too.

Cant agree more. I do keep following some crime cases and Mumbai police can still surprise with their speed. They are as well in dealing with the underworld as they are in intelligent investigations. The most professional and competent police force in India.

This is getting ridiculous. In the south we have tamil actor's and director's fighting for Tamil people's right in SRI LANKA but NO ONE is standing up for the evil scheme MNS lead Raj is making. Why are we so dumbfounded when it comes to fighting for our own people ? Why are the South Indians worried about wtf is going on in SL rather than worrying about our own country's nemesis. Who the eff is Raj to say who can or cannot come in Maharashtra ? He needs to be reminded that Maharashtra itself lies in India and there are no passport/visa requirements needed for fellow Indians to visit the state. If Raj really wants to gloat about Mumbai's progress then he really needs to look at the people who are behind it. There are hardly any Marathi's that have led to Mumbai's success. Why isn't he kicking Ambani out of Mumbai (as Ambani is of Gujju descent) ? Canadian news channel have been reporting this rift between 'north' and 'west' region and its pretty disgusting + embarrassing for me to follow such meaningless rift. God bless India !

This is mumbai, who knows what the guy had a trigger to a bomb..explosives in his body..we got too many such samples in India

Police did the right thing. Try doing that in USA or Canada and you can pretty much garantee you will be reserving space in the cheapest cemetary in town. Public safety comes first- if you are discharging firearms in a public place, you are a categoric priority threat and would be eliminated in most sane nations! Furthermore, calculated shot ? What calculated shot ? HAve any of you fired a gun or handgun ? Indian police do not have high callibre sniper rifles like Dragunov or Mauser - without that callibre of rifle, you CANNOT aim for anything but the torso ( you are stupid to even try and aim for the head) from more than 10 meters away and i am assuming that police didnt get closer than that (because that is highly rare in encounters of this type).. You cant just whip out your pistol or glock and try shooting someone in the arm or knee from more than 10-15 meters away and even if you hit from that range, you are hell of a good shot. So 'calculated shot' was simply not an option and those who are saying that could've been done simply know absolutely nada about guns or handling guns.
