^ However Ganguly admitted that the declaration was his idea and has since said that he regrets the timing of the declaration. So even the people responsible for it (SG and RD) knew the declaration was not timed well.
May be his idea, but not his decision. A captain takes ideas and opinions from several people and then makes his own decision. When a captain wins a match, he gets the credit. No one asks who gave him ideas. Likewise Kumble took that decision. When (and if) Ganguly suggested that a declaration should be made, did Dravid not know that Sachin needed just six for his 200? Why did he wait for Sachin to get 4 deliveries to complete his six?

Individual's perception' date=' may be he felt we didnt have enough and felt Sach could score the 16 needed runs within the 30 mins, IMO RD or SCG were right, and i reiterate we would have been singing a different tune, had we not won the Test !!![/quote'] RD and SG were wrong. And they admit they were wrong. I dont think there is any question that the decision was wrong. The question however is: whether it was intentional or not.

Intentional :(( , the kinda guy Dravid seems to be, i would seriously doubt it, howver i personally think that the declaration decision had some merit !!!

Nah...come on, it wouldn't be intentional...man, all the guys in the team respect sachin and they know he is a league above and they are not in competition with him...I can't see Dravid doing it intentionally. I still can't figure out how the Indian team makes decisions though....sometimes, I find myself scratching my head in disbelief at the decisions they make on and off the field.

Dravid was right.I wish there were a few more in the team like him. I have seriously lost all respect for Mr. Bharat for insunuating that Dravid had any reason other than team situation for doing so. Sick minds!

Alas !!! Someone Agrees !!!

That was one of the biggest goof up by Dravid (or whoever was behind that decision). They could have told Sachin that he has 2-3 overs more. 200 Vs Pakistan in Pakistan would have been great.. I hope Sachin does it before he retires

Dravid's criteria was - Does the team have enough runs to declare? Kumble's criteria was - Has my player reached his personal milestone to declare? Only idiots will complain about the first one and we seem to have quite a few here.

..had 673 in Rawalpindi as well, even 650 was enough too Dravid didn't do anything wrong, it was only a matter of 2 overs or so. About calling other idiots, take it easy sir ..their opinion is as valuable as yours Comprehend

While this was addressed to Yoda, let me post this:

..had 673 in Rawalpindi as well, even 650 was enough too Dravid didn't do anything wrong, it was only a matter of 2 overs or so.
Bottomline is - there is nothing big deal about what Dravid did, he put the team ahead of everything else, and that is the way it should have been. If there have been other instances, where Dravid did *not* put the team ahead of everything else, then he was wrong. He was right in the former instance, and wrong in the latter.
About calling other idiots, take it easy sir ..their opinion is as valuable as yoursComprehend
Good point u have mentioned to yoda, agreed. It is a valid comment and should be mentioned to all in ICF - some are quick to call names when someone else posts a viewpoint which may be different or vastly different from theirs. Instead folks can disagree or just ignore it without getting all worked up personally as though Dravid is their brother or Yuvraj is their son etc or SRT is their Almighty whatever.

In India, and Pakistan for that matter - love to reserve their stats and no one can deny this. The public, players and media eagerly waits for that 1 run or sixer to reach that milestone with cameras ready and the batsman already rehearsing that moment with flashes of raising the bat or looking at the sun Dravid, is no different to this system; come from the same soil, mentality and blood. A historic tour to Pak, 673 runs ( not 600, not 650 but 673 ..a regular figure ) on the board and a great is 6 short of a superb double and you declare. OK..GREAT, and you must have heard Manjrekar saying " this is the changing face of Indian cricket" ..so was it ever consistent? ..and please dont tell me that Dravid never thinks about crossing a milestone, if that's the case why do batsmen slow donw just before a century; afterall its just a number right 98 or 102 ( why does it matter ) Sachin felt it too, I guess he must be an idiot as well --------- P.S About this star wars character, I have already noticed 2 threads where you simply come in and put a 2 liner " you are idiots, you crackheads". In normal instances , people give back to each other and that's OK, part of a liberal board but simply generalizing like that is not good. I already requested to take it easy and I hope its fixed

People supporting Rahul's decision of declaring just because SRT was "playing slow" is absolutely ridiculous. RD has been a known slow performer no matter what the situation is the game in. As Rajeev mentioned earlier, Tendulkar simply did not get to bat after the message was sent to him, so how did RD expect SRT to score "faster" in "team's interest". I've said earlier and even Rajeev mentioned that our players/media satisfy their hunger by looking at the amount of *individual* runs scored. To me there is nothing wrong with this as long as they help the team win. Double ton vs Pakistan in Pakistan, is a great achievement for any Indian player no matter how many runs does he have in his career's tally. Moreover, tendulkar never b*tched about the declaration...he just gave an honest answer to the question "I was bit surprised"... guess what more than half of the cricket followers were too surprised.

The fact was India were 588/4 at tea ... If he was putting the team first, like Rajeev said ... why not declare at 600? That would have given India even more time to go for the win. That day India got to bowl 16 overs at Pakistan. Given that he just sent out a message to hurry things up, if he had waited say maximum 3 overs (which would have been sufficient for Sachin) then India would have got 13 overs (roughly 1 hour, give or take) at Pakistan late in the day, which would have been enough. * If he was thinking only about the team ... then he could have declared at 600 or 650. * If he was thinking about Sachin ... then he should have waited 3 more overs. Dravid was stuck somewhere in between (and there is the possibility he was protecting his own record, although given Dravids nature its unlikely he was) ... and thus the declaration was not timed well.

It is simple. He waited for him to feel comfortable as a captain that he had enough runs on the board. There is no magic number. Remember Ganguly in 2001 kolkatta? Everyone thought it was a late declaration. Well the captain wanted more. It can only be called ill-timed if it came in the way of winning the test, not because someone's hero didn't get a chance to add to his personal milestone in a team game.

its a little ridiculous to say Dravid is "protecting" his record - Dravid is simply too great a batsman to worry abt whether someone else can overtake him or equal by scoring a "200". (like u urself said its unlikely given Dravid's nature) This was simply a question of a captain of team declaring when he felt the time was right to declare. If a "statistic" was not to be achieved for 'personal glory' - then it was done for team purpose. Input from 'resting captain' Dada Ganguly was also involved in this declaration.

In fact Kumble's declaration can be termed ill-timed as it was strictly based on a personal record, not a run a before, not a run after.

i've made the same point as post before me. Its the captain's call on "how many runs on board" is comfortable before declaring.
Then why not wait 2 or 3 more overs? ... surely that would make him more comfortable ... and theyd still get many overs to bowl at Pakistan that evening.
