BCCI obtains TUE for Harbhajan Anand Vasu, Hindustan Times New Delhi, October 30, 2008 First Published: 23:15 IST(30/10/2008) Last Updated: 23:18 IST(30/10/2008) Relief could be around the corner for Harbhajan Singh, who missed the third Test against Australia at Delhi after failing to recover from a toe injury. The offspinner, who has enjoyed tremendous success against the Australians, could well be back in the team for the final Test, which starts in Nagpur on November 6, after the Board of Control for Cricket in India sought and obtained a Therapeutic Use Exemption (TUE) certificate to administer a steroid that could give him significant relief. The team is keen to have Harbhajan back in the mix at the earliest and things moved quickly on Thursday to make this possible. “This is defeinitely good news for us,†a team source told the HT. “We believe this medication can give him full and instant relief.†Detailed investigations, including an MRI and a CT scan, confirmed the injury to Harbhajan’s left foot (metatarsophalangeal joint problem). Nitin Patel, the team physiotherapist, in consultation with other specialists, reached the conclusion that the best method of treatment would be a steroid injection. The drug that medical specialists wanted to administer was a single dose injection of Depo-Medrol. Since this contains the substance Methylprednisolone Acetate, which falls in the categories of steroids banned under the World Anti Doping Agency guidelines that the ICC has adopted, doctors could not administer the drug without appropriate permission. The Indian board on Thursday wrote to the ICC's anti-doping agency requesting a TUE certificate. The matter was dealt with on an urgent basis and this certificate has already been issued. Harbhajan has been told to keep a copy of this certificate with him. Depo-Medrol is in the class of medicines known as glucocorticoid or corticosteroid, and is used to reduce inflammation in joints. Although there is no concensus in the scientific community on just how this drug works, it is believed to suppress the production of certain cells and chemicals by the body when a joint is inflamed. Depo-Medrol is typically used in the treatment of sports injuries but is also used to provide relief to patients suffering from Osteo Arthritis. LINK And many of us believed that he sacrificed his place for one test so that Kumble could go down with a blaze of glory. But now Kumble is injured himself and Mishra didn't inspire enough confidence in his second test. What'll happen if we don't win the Kotla test?

well in some perverse way I am happy that the inury was legit so that we dont have wonder about any back room machinations. On the other hand, I really hope that this works as they think it does because we are going to need Bhajji at Nagpur unless the curator decides to gift away the series once again.

What a homer article. The guy has 8 wickets in two test matches in this series at an average of 34. Tremendous success indeed. He bowled like a twit in the first test. :hysterical:

But he strikes at critical times and seems to lift the team with him...his presence in the team is more than the wickets he takes...it's the fight he puts in.
Oh, you mean like a cheer leader or some sort of team mascot? :hysterical: Seriously, Bhajji is probably the most over hyped bowler in the subcontinent. I wonder how the team was being lifted up when he was bowling defensively to the leg stump in the first test match and in general bowling horribly. It's become a media thing mostly though about India vs Australia and you're right it's about the fight he puts in because it sure as hell hasn't been about his bowling for years.

If Bajji is over hyped, why dont you shut the fak up and stop talking about him?

However you describe it...it seems to work. He adds an aggressive edge to the side mentally. Perhaps it's because of the fortitude with which he bore his ordeal in Australia when he had thousands of fans baying at him from the stands and yet stood up mentally strong, played on aggressively and came good in the CB series (and a few choice dismissals in the tests too). This kind of gutsy effort tends to motivate and spur on the others when he is in the side.

True enough, he does have a lot of history there and has done well under the pressure but it doesn't translate to cricketing performance and ability like the article is suggesting. I'm not questioned what happened to/with Harbhajan just that, unfortunately in India, media hype and sensationalism is too often and mistakenly associated with actual talent and substance. Case in point being guys like Bhajji and Sreesanth who are in the headlines for the wrong reasons when much better players are ignored simply because they choose to focus on their cricket instead.

What rubbish! If he is over hyped why is he ranked number 9 in the world rankings? He is very underated and does not get the credit he deserves for all the wickets he has got which is now 299. He also is a suberb odi player.

I don't understand all the stick he gets. Is it racist? I think people resent the fiery nature of us punjabis, yuvraj also gets an uncalled for level of stick. People resent the punjabi loud mouth, brash, in your face nature!
No one gives a damn. You can shoot off your mouth as much as you can but you need to back it up! WTF has yuvi done instead of giving interviews on how he wants to captain India one day. Harbhajan hasn't done much either that he can shoot off his mouth whenever he wishes to. If he concentrated all that time on his bowling, then he would have been a better bowler by now.

They shoot their mouth off on the pitch. Whats wrong with that? Bhaji and yuvi never take a backward step on the pitch and likem to dish it out, especially if they are recieving stick. Dada does the same and is loved for it!

We're talking about the test series so try and focus. Tell us again how Harbhajan has done outside India? I've said it before, in India he's a very good bowler but he's no better than a dozen other spinners outside Indian pitches.
