putrevus
Matthew Hayden has been the best opener in world cricket for a few years now - only player who might challenge him is Graeme Smith. Sehwag is also up there, but as we can admit, Veeru is rather hot and cold. Sehwag differs from Smith and Hayden, in that he can change a test match in the space of 10-15 overs, can score really quick, but sometimes will go out for a quick, 40-50+. Still amazing though. Hayden has consistantly scored for Australia, bar the recent Indian series and the NZ series going on now. It will be sad to see Hayden go, he is an amazing player when on song. Players like Hayden, like Dravid, like Ponting dont score X amount of runs in test cricket and just suddenly lose it. It is their ability to bounce back, that make them champions. If Hayden goes, Australia have depth in that opening spot. Phil Jacques and Simon Katich will make a great opening pair. Loathe or Love Hayden - you have to respect his game as an international cricketer. Hayden has great stats in Australia something like 23 100s of his total 30 .Except in india his overseas record is not that great. Link to comment
satishg
i dont see him retiring..he just had one bad series against us and that too in the last innings wen everyone were failing he scored 80 odd runs at a brisk pace and Oz really felt that they had a chance wen he was at the crease..before this series he din play against Windies because of his injury and last december he was at his prolific best against us..so these talks of him failing are a bit premature IMO Link to comment

King Tendulkar
Surely hayden has to be axed or retire. He has been awful and has failed again. He is an old git who is refusing to go and some people lauded the gora players for retiring early and not hanging around like a bad smell. He is 37 and is batting like an OAP. He will be a total liabilty if he plays in ashes. Will he throw in the towel or be pushed Link to comment
cochise
No...I think he should stay on for at least 5 or more years. Link to comment
bharat297
i dont think he is actually out of form that much ... i think he could score big very very soon. Link to comment
Sachinism
I feel he is going as well Its time he's had a great career, but its time to end my friend Link to comment
Ram
He came back well in the late end of the tour against Ind. His form is kinda stop-start, one good innings, lotsa mediocre ones in between, creating an illusion that he's totally out of form, which I dont think he is. Link to comment
cochise
He is out of form. You should have seen him bat today...meek, unsure and tentative...compared to the Hayden we have come to know, this is a shadow... Could change boxing day though. Link to comment

Of course, he is struggling, no doubt about that. But, he's not going through as big a crisis as he's being portrayed out to be. Link to comment
cochise
You never know. You just never know...these things happen a lot quicker in Aussie cricket than in India...legends get the push very fast and sometimes, they decide very fast to exit as well. Look at Gilchrist. One dropped catch and he knew it was time...and he exited. The same thing may come to Hayden. Also, media here is turning the heat up on him...and competition...Hughes, Jaques and Rogers all pushing for openers spot. Link to comment
cochise
By the way...talking about openers, Katich is doing really well. Have you noticed that he and Chanderpaul have the same ugly crab-like movements at the crease when batting and both of them are really prospering at the moment? Interesting. Link to comment

Sachinism
If Matthew Hayden does not decide to end his career after this match, Australia's selectors must be brave enough to finish it for him. In the increasingly likely event that South Africa win the series in Melbourne and the Sydney Test becomes a dead rubber, it would be the perfect time to audition a new partner for Simon Katich in a low-pressure situation. http://content-www.cricinfo.com/ausvrsa2008_09/content/current/story/384586.html could this be the end of a quite brilliant career in such a short time he's achieved so much Link to comment
cowboysfan
hayden has always been suspect against good bowling-he knows he cant handle them hence he tries to hit his way out of trouble every time;its just not working at the moment-it didnt work in india too. Link to comment
Desi Cartman
I think Aussie selectors will let him play for another few months since Phil Jaques is still injured and there are few batters in the XI who are out of form . They dont have a choice right now Link to comment
The Outsider
This is one spot where Australia do have good replacements - one out of Jacques, Hughes, and Marsh is probably going to hit big. Link to comment

Hughes : only option but I think he is just 20 .. and Aussie selectors very rarely give young guys a go Link to comment
