A third Indian Test still on the cards 6:04PM Friday January 09, 2009 Source: Reuters singh_dhoni_cele_2.jpgHarbhajan Singh and MS Dhoni A decision on whether a third Test will be added to India's tour of New Zealand in March should be made by next week, New Zealand Cricket (NZC) said on Friday. Indian officials had asked their New Zealand counterparts to consider adding a Test to the itinerary to help recover lost revenue from cancelled events. India are scheduled to play two Tests, five one-day internationals and a Twenty20 international in New Zealand from March 6-April 7. NZC said in a brief statement on Friday that talks between it and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) were continuing and a decision would not be made until next week. New Zealand media has suggested should a third Test be added, it would likely necessitate the tourists arriving a week earlier and playing the Test before embarking on the already agreed schedule. The cash-rich BCCI earlier this month reported a revenue loss of around $25 million from the postponement of last year's Champions Trophy in Pakistan, the scrapping of two one-day games against England and the tour of Pakistan in the wake of militant attacks in Mumbai in November. India, who have no international cricket scheduled until the New Zealand tour, are also in talks with Sri Lanka to stage a one-day series.

No call yet on extra Indian test New Zealand Cricket (NZC) is no closer to being able to provide the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) with a definite response to its request to have a test match added to its upcoming tour of this country. More... No call yet on extra Indian test By HAMISH BIDWELL - The Press | Saturday, 10 January 2009 New Zealand Cricket (NZC) is no closer to being able to provide the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) with a definite response to its request to have a test match added to its upcoming tour of this country. Keen to boost revenue after the cancellation of matches against England and Pakistan cost it an estimated $25 million, the BCCI had asked NZC to revise the schedule to include a third test. Having indicated that it would have decided whether the proposal was feasible by the end of this week, NZC announced yesterday that it needed more time. The tour is due to run from March 6 to April 7 and both moving those dates forward or tacking the proposed match on to the end of the series appear to present significant challenges. "There are a lot of factors to take into account: travel, accommodation, what it does to the (existing) schedule," a NZC spokesman said. "All of these things have to be looked at so it's a matter of continuing a dialogue between ourselves and the Indians and us looking at what we can do with the schedule at this end," he said. Despite giving the extra test "positive consideration" and having "quite a team of people" looking at how it may fit into the domestic programme, the spokesman said NZC could not say if the match was likely to go ahead or even if it had a preferred date in mind. "There's a whole range of options that are on the table and we're not really in a position to come down too firmly on any particular one at the moment." The BCCI has made plain its desire to see the extra match go ahead, while New Zealand coach Andy Moles and captain Daniel Vettori also expressed interest in the proposal.

India to play extra Test in Napier http://blogs.cricinfo.com/thebuzz/

India will play an additional third Test in Napier, on their tour of New Zealand beginning in March. New Zealand Cricket (NZC) are expected to make an official announcement in the next 24 hours which may also result in the addition of a Twenty20 match to the one originally scheduled. Reports in Cricketnirvana.com and the Times said the initial arrangement of having a two-Test series, following a Twenty20 tour opener and a subsequent five-match ODI series will be amended, in order to include the extra Test. Unable to accomodate the match towards the end of the tour itinerary because of the IPL commitments, NZC officials are understood to have scrapped the three-day warm-up match in late Match (at the end of the ODI series and before the first Test in Hamilton) in order to fit the additional fixture. The extra Test was made possible because of the abandonment of the previously-scheduled series between Indian and Pakistan which was called off in the afterrmath of the terror attacks in Mumbai. The revised schedule is likely to have the first Test being played in Hamilton a week earlier than expected, followed by the additional match in Napier, with Wellington hosting the third Test in the first week of April.
Right so its confirmed.:yay: Kudos to the BCCI:two_thumbs_up: err..maybe not.
Auckland: The good news is that India will play an additional third Test against New Zealand in the upcoming series - the bad news is that it's scheduled to be played in Wellington in April; the equivalent of organising a Test match at Leeds in September. New Zealand Cricket are expected to announce in the next 24 hours the accommodation of a third Test against the world number 3 seeds, and possibly the addition of a second Twenty20 contest to be played in the first half of the tour. cricketnirvana.com sources in New Zealand believe the initial arrangement of having a two-Test series following a Twenty20 tour opening and a subsequent five match ODI showdown will be amended, in order to include an extra Test match in the North Island seaside venue of Napier. However, unable to tack the extra Test on to the end of the visit because of upcoming Indian Premier League commitments, NZC officials are understood to have scratched the three day tour match in late Match (at the end of the ODI series and before the initially scheduled opening Test) in order to shoe-horn in the extra fixture. NZC will announce the first Test is now to be played in Hamilton a week earlier than expected; that the additional test will be staged in Napier, and that the third will be played in Wellington in the first week of April. The extra Test match was made possible because of the abandonment of the previously scheduled series between Indian and Pakistan; a result of the falling out after the terrorist attacks in Mumbai. The expected announcement of an expanded series, featuring a final match in Wellington in April has raised eyebrows in New Zealand, where the West Indies have recently completed a rain-ravaged series, in which almost every contest was affected by the weather. While it was expected the original two-Test series would be shunted forward, allowing for the April finale to be staged in the warmer climes of Napier, it's understood the logistics of changing the Wellington dates were too complicated to justify the shift.

Our ODI players might get acclimatised by then but what about the guys who do not play ODIs like Dravid, Laxman, Mishra? How will they get practice after such a long period of break?

^ Eh? Can't they cancel couple of stupid ODIs (make it a 3 odi series) or the stupid 2 T20s they now have in the series, and then make time for the extraTest (keeping the warm up match as well). Its the obsession with ODI and T20 and not prioritizing Test matches that bugs.
