Lurker Posted January 19, 2009 Posted January 19, 2009 Pak girl beaten up for sporting tattoo in Urdu A Pakistani national, who had come to pursue a course in production from Whistling Woods International Institute in Mumbai, was beaten up at a Malad mall last week for sporting a tattoo in Urdu on her back. The incident scared the girl so much that she left for Pakistan on Friday. Saba Najam, 22, was roughed up at Hypercity Mall in Malad last Monday after some people spotted a tattoo in Urdu on her back. The incident took place at around 8.30 pm when Saba had gone to the washroom of the mall. Some women suddenly approached her and assaulted her over the tattoo which read ‘Shukr Alham Du Lillah’, meaning ‘Thank you, God’. Riyaz Ahmed Talukdar, a member of Jan Seva Sangh, a local NGO, had first spotted the tattoo on Saba’s back and informed his mother, Shabana Talukdar. Riyaz said, “When I saw the tattoo I was furious as holy words from the Quran were on her back.” Shabana, along with a few other women, then came to the mall in the next 15 minutes and confronted Saba in the washroom. They slapped the girl several times before the mall management intervened. “Since both the parties concerned are our patrons we simply referred the matter to the police,” said Manvir Singh, spokesperson of Hypercity Mall. The group, along with Saba, were taken to the Bangur Nagar police station. According to Bangur Nagar police, Saba apologised profusely and said she hadn’t known that the tattoo would hurt anybody’s sentiments. Danaji Na*****, inspector in-charge of crime at the police station, said, “There was nothing objectionable about the tattoo and there are no legal provisions under which we could have booked her. But since the group of people were agitated we asked Saba to give her statement in writing.” In her statement Saba said she was sorry and that she would get the tattoo removed through laser surgery in the next three days. Nevertheless, the cops referred the matter to legal experts to see if they could book Saba for hurting religious sentiments or under any other legal provision. On Friday night, however, Saba left for Lahore. Ravi Gupta, executive director of Whistling Woods told Mumbai Mirror that Saba seemed extremely disturbed after the incident. “We had spoken to the cops who assured us that there was no case against her. We told her there was nothing to worry about but she was too scared,” he said. Saba hails from Lahore in Pakistan and had come to Mumbai in 2007 on a student visa. She joined Whistling Woods in 2008. She got the tattoo done from a tattoo parlour in Bandra in February 2008. Saba was unavailable for comment. Meanwhile, Riyaz says he is happy Saba has left the country. http://mumbaimirror.com/article/2/20090119200901190252246906371d0fc/Pak-girl-beaten-up-for-sporting-tattoo-in-Urdu People who are working in NGO get their Moms to assault ladies! Today there was an article by Ramchandra Guha in Outlook suggesting how he was welcomed everywhere in Pakistan, here we seem hell bent on beating comedians and students from across the border. Sab saalon ne milke Mumbai ki maan **** di hai.
fineleg Posted January 19, 2009 Posted January 19, 2009 WTF - can we give a beating in public to those who mercilessly beat this girl? Such swines those bloody women pigs. And what the hell were the cops doing? Instead of booking these hooligan swine women, they get a "statment from Saba" and let all these people go!?
graphic23 Posted January 19, 2009 Posted January 19, 2009 It is unfortunate. I thought we'd be the more educated ones than them. :(( Now, this is an incident that makes you feel that there are few who are just as fanatic as the world across the border. I wonder if it would've made a difference if it was a man who had the tattoo.

This is real bad, that Indians behaved this way. Very unfortunate.
ludhianvi Posted January 19, 2009 Posted January 19, 2009 The girl got roughed up for having a tatoo NOT because it was in Urdu but because the text was considered sacred by those that beat up the girl.
fineleg Posted January 19, 2009 Posted January 19, 2009 The girl got roughed up for having a tatoo NOT because it was in Urdu but because the text was considered sacred by those that beat up the girl. Maybe she was a SRT fan, whats wrong? Sorry, joke aside, even if it was from Quran (tatoo says thank you god), how can they assault her like this? Is that any justification?
EnterTheVoid Posted January 19, 2009 Posted January 19, 2009 phew, for a second there, i thought she was beaten up by hindu's for being a muslim seriously, if you wore a shirt / trouser that had pictures of hindu gods / symbols (etc), i wouldn't be surprised if you got the living s**** pounded out of you Some things are just too sensitive -> such things, you dont f**** around with wouldn't she get beaten up in pakistan if some religious zealot noticed the tattoo when she's not wearing a headscarf / burkha?

I know someone who has a tattoo on her legs of a hindu god. Never saw her beaten up in Bangalore. Same with a guy as well.
punjabi_khota Posted January 19, 2009 Posted January 19, 2009 This has nothing to do with her being a Pakistani, and everything to do with her religion, and the intolerance of those belonging to her religion.
Rajiv Posted January 19, 2009 Posted January 19, 2009 Threat title is misleading, it made it sound like Mumbai'ites assaulted her; that is; if they figured out she is Pakistani and on top she had something offensive written Another Muslim person objected to whats written and cases like this happen all the time, so where did Mumbai misbehave in this..infact she is still there studying even after the incidents If you talk about the cop, they would try the best to diffuse tension and that too she is on a student visa
EnterTheVoid Posted January 19, 2009 Posted January 19, 2009 I know someone who has a tattoo on her legs of a hindu god. Never saw her beaten up in Bangalore. Same with a guy as well. they probably never met radical hindu extremist either way, its a risky propositio - I am religious and all, but theres no way I would sport a tattoo depicting hindu religion / gods etc - i just want to live, thats all
DomainK Posted January 19, 2009 Posted January 19, 2009 I am very disappointed with the way the mall management and the police handled the case. There was a clear case against the woman who started the farce and she was let off cleanly. And they not only recorded the girl's statement, they were also looking for opportunities to book her. This is outrageous.
DomainK Posted January 19, 2009 Posted January 19, 2009 This has nothing to do with her being a Pakistani' date=' and everything to do with her religion, and the intolerance of those belonging to her religion.[/quote'] Not enough grounds Khota. Some people from her community are misbehaving and she is getting beaten for that? Our public and our police runs for cover when the real ones come, but harass the innocent ones when they find them? Our politicians on one hand defend the bloody terrorists and on the other hand beat up innocent people. That girl got beaten up because the public knew very well that she was harmless. If she was one of the fanatics with a weapon or a suicide bomb around around her waist, the same public would have run away pissing. If we must show our anger, we need to show to the right people. Not to the innocent ones. This is cowardice.

Fineleg, you should know what to say and what not to say even in jest.
sandtest Posted January 19, 2009 Posted January 19, 2009 Title is highly misleading and purposefully done so to vent someone's previous frustrations and his obvious petty attempt to shield one particular religion's non-tolerant nature, which he has squarely blamed on Mumbai. What's fracking wrong with these apologist Indians? Here is my no twist, no thrill take.. basically the Islamist who obviously knew how to read Urdu (please note a common Mumbaikar cannot READ Urdu) after reading what's written in the girls back got offended. Obviously it's Blasphemy in Islam to even have tattos -- forget sporting Allah name on your body part, heck even exposing body offends Islamists. So this pious believer, in disguise of NGO arranged assaulting that girl. The whole media as usual gobbled it up blaming Mumbai and one apologist lapped it up here by posting. So what next, tomorrow if a Mullah from Bhindi Bazar assaults someone because of bad bowel movement in morning, you will blame Mumbai?? What logic is this? Why you apologists are soooo afraid of criticizing the Religion of peace? PS: Mods/Rajiv I hope this thread title is changed or added with assault by Islamists, current title serves no purpose than further propaganda of p-secs and apologists.

I am not condoning their act by any means, but they are yet another example of intolerant Muslims.
flamy Posted January 19, 2009 Posted January 19, 2009 I was thinkin of getting some Sanskrit tatoos done. SOme translation of "want some?" or "consent donor"

Haha. It could have very well said Muslims beat up the girl. As valid as saying Mumbaikars beat her up. Both are true.

NO, you obviously don't want to see the context. The thread title at least could very well have been -- "This is not the Mumbai Muslims I Loved". But knowing the apologists here I expected blaming everyone except the obvious.
