‘No room for friendship’ : Dhoni Sri Lanka skipper Mahela Jayawardene and his Indian counterpart Mahendra Singh Dhoni dismiss talk of the teams taking the hurriedly-arranged tour lightly, reports Nilankur Das. More... ‘No room for friendship’ Nilankur Das Colombo, January 27, 2009 First Published: 13:15 IST(27/1/2009) Last Updated: 14:34 IST(27/1/2009) Except for 'immune' reporters aboard the packed Flight 9W 252, the rest had their day made. Other than India's 60th Republic Day, the occasion was the cricket team's trip from Chennai to Colombo for the five-match one-day series and a T20 match against the emerald nation. A lady literally jumped out of her seat when fielding coach Robin Singh came on board followed by Suresh Raina. "Is the rest of the team here?" she had barely managed to ask when Sachin Tendulkar occupied a first-row aisle seat. The lady may have been stunned into silence but Tendulkar's arrival triggered off frenetic activity. Armed with camera phones, passengers tried their best to bridge the class divide by making a beeline to the entrance of the business class, ignoring the captain's requests to return to their seats. Thankfully, the delay was not significant and order was restored after the crew assured the passengers that they would get ample time for photographs and autographs once they had landed. But despite that, the excitement refused to subside during the hour-long flight. Just before landing, a crewmember got a flight attendant to click him with the players and then got them to sign a bat. On their part, the players did what they generally don't --- oblige --- and then went back to doing their stuff, listening to music. Tendulkar was seen engaged in a long discussion with coach Gary Kirsten, seated next to him. Yusuf Pathan kept peering out of the window while Ishant Sharma spent a considerable time trying to get some extra space for those long legs. After touching base, the teams went to the hotel where skippers Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Mahela Jayawardene addressed the media in the evening. The Indians then visited the Indian High Commission before setting off for Dambulla, venue of the first match on Wednesday. Both captains brushed aside suggestions that the players would take the series, hurriedly put in place after India cancelled the tour to Pakistan, lightly. "The boards may have very friendly relations but on the field it's always serious stuff," said Jayawardene. While nodding in agreement, Dhoni seemed to be preoccupied after an organiser informed him that it had rained in Dambulla on Sunday.

'Chance for young spinners to shine in Harbhajan's absence' Mahendra Singh Dhoni admitted that Harbhajan Singh would be sorely missed by his side in the ODI series against Sri Lanka but said it provides an opportunity to young spinners to prove their mettle in spin-friendly tracks in the island. More... 'Chance for young spinners to shine in Harbhajan's absence' Press Trust Of India Colombo, January 27, 2009 First Published: 14:25 IST(27/1/2009) Last Updated: 14:28 IST(27/1/2009) India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni today admitted that the experience of Harbhajan Singh would be sorely missed by his side in the five-match ODI series against Sri Lanka but said it provides an opportunity to young spinners to prove their mettle in spin-friendly tracks in the island. "Harbhajan has been our pick of the spinners for some time. Whether you are bowling first or second or bowling in powerplays, he is the person. We will miss him as pitches in Colombo give assistance to spinners," Dhoni said at a joint press conference with home team skipper Mahela Jayawardene after reaching the island nation. "Harbhajan is recovering from injury. So we have two spinners in the side, Pragyan Ojha and Ravindra Jadeja. I think they will try to fill in the space left by Harbhajan's absence. Of course we have part-timers also who have done well. It is an opportunity for both the spinners to prove themselves," Dhoni added. India have been in great form in one-dayers recently having beaten England 5-0 but Dhoni said that would not count much and they would have to start from scratch against the Lankans. "Frankly speaking, you know most of the international sides now. You know each and every player of their team. We have played against them (Lankans) quite frequently. But it is not how often you have played against a team or a player. You have to start from the scratch. "It will be a tough series. It is tough to beat Sri Lanka in Sri Lanka though we had defeated them the last time around."

Ojha relishes leading role Left-arm spinner Pragyan Ojha is confident of shouldering the responsibility of being India's frontline slow bowler on the tour of Sri Lanka. More... Ojha relishes leading role 27 January 2009 Pragyan Ojha is keen to strenghten his case in the absence of Harbhajan Singh Left-arm spinner Pragyan Ojha is confident of shouldering the responsibility of being India's frontline slow bowler on the tour of Sri Lanka. The squad arrived in Sri Lanka yesterday for a five-match one-day series and a Twenty20 international, but they are without off-spinner Harbhajan Singh, who was overlooked due to a hamstring injury. Captain Mahendra Dhoni believes the absence of Harbhajan, India's most successful spinner in the recent times, presents an opportunity for youngsters Ojha and Ravindra Jadeja, an uncapped left-arm spinner, to prove themselves. Ojha, 22, believes he is ready for the challenge. “Filling in for someone like Harbhajan is always a difficult job to do,” he said. “Harbhajan is a great bowler and he has been doing a fantastic job both in Test and one-dayers. We'll miss Bhajji for sure. “But I aim to look at it positively. It’s an important series for us and I would like to pounce on every given opportunity. “I'm fully committed to my job and have enough conviction to take the responsibility.” Ojha does not believe Sri Lanka have the edge over India due to the presence of Muttiah Muralitharan and Ajantha Mendis in their ranks. Off-spinner Muralitharan needs three more wickets to overtake Wasim Akram's record of 502 in one-day internationals. Mendis has been a prolific performer since he burst on to the scene in the Asia Cup last year, becoming the quickest bowler in history to reach 50 ODI wickets. "We have huge respect for Murali and Mendis, but is important is to perform on the particular day," Ojha said. "As a spinner you don't get a five-wicket haul in every match, but I think in ODIs its equally important to restrict the runs. "I think if you finish your spell with 30 runs and two wickets, its a fair achievement. I have the confidence of doing well.” Dhoni admitted India would miss Harbhajan, but retains high hopes of success in Sri Lanka. "Harbhajan has been the pick of the spinners for some time," he said. "Whether you are bowling first or second or bowling in powerplays, he always delivers. "We will miss him as pitches here assist the spinners. It is an opportunity for both Ojha and Jadeja to prove themselves.”

Chennai: The Indian team, bound for the five one-day and one Twenty20 cricket series in Sri Lanka starting on January 28, had a 90 minute workout at the MAC Stadium on Monday before departure. After the practice session it was left to the young Ravindra Jadeja to interact with the media. Asserting that the team would perform to the potential notwithstanding the absence of the seasoned Harbhajan Singh, the all rounder said, “all of us are geared to give our best.” While the team management decided against holding an official pre-tour media briefing by the skipper, Jadeja spoke about his determination to give full support to the team in all the departments. “It’s really a good experience. “It’s a pleasure sharing the dressing room with the seniors. I could learn a lot from them,” he added.
