NEW DELHI (AFP) — India's cricket chiefs Monday named swashbuckling opener Virender Sehwag as the country's player of the year for 2007-2008. Sehwag, 30, will receive the Polly Umrigar award, named after a former India captain, at a function organised by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) in Mumbai on February 18. Sehwag dominated Indian batting since his return to the Test side on the 2007-08 tour of Australia after being overlooked for the away series against Bangladesh and England and the home matches against Pakistan. In 2008, the opening batsman scored 1,462 runs in 14 Tests at an average of 56.23, including a blistering triple-century against South Africa in Chennai. Sehwag was also part of India's World Cup-winning Twenty20 squad in South Africa in September, 2007. Cheteshwar Pujara, a 21-year-old from Saurashtra, was named the best batsman in domestic cricket for scoring 807 runs at an average of 73.36 runs in the country's premier first-class tournament for the Ranji Trophy. Uttar Pradesh seamer Sudeep Tyagi, who picked up 41 wickets at 21.63 in the Ranji Trophy, was named the best bowler in domestic cricket. Former Test batsman Gundappa Viswanath will receive the C.K. Nayudu award, named after the legendary India captain, for his lifetime contribution to the game. The stylish middle-order batsman, who scored a Test century on debut against Australia in 1969, has served as India's chairman of selectors in the past. India stars Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Harbhajan Singh, recipients of the country's fourth-highest civilian awards, the Padma Shri, last month, will also receive special awards from the BCCI. Dhoni led India to victory in the World Twenty20 championships, while Harbhajan surpassed 300 wickets during the home series against Australia last October-November.

Congratulations to Viru. "Cheteshwar Pujara, a 21-year-old from Saurashtra, was named the best batsman in domestic cricket for scoring 807 runs at an average of 73.36 runs in the country's premier first-class tournament for the Ranji Trophy." How ironic :)

Can't imagine where team would be without Sehwag... In Test matches, he has been our sole matchwinner.... cant remember a single Test in last year we won without his contribution...the guy scares the crap out of all the bowlers in the world....no effing feet movement and none of that technical crap & garbage of front foot defensive *****..pure power and hand-to-eye coordination....the guy means Business!!... Cricket needs more Sehwagss....

Wat about Sudeep Tyagi? He bowled exceptionally too........
Old news rkt. This year even the UP squad dropped him from the squad and that too pretty early in the tournament. Why does BCCI react so late? Why not build this up like CA does for Allan Border medal and generate some interest in fans? How many of you even knew if there is such an award to be given?
I had posted something on Pujara's tendency to score a lot on flat tracks. And' date=' a minute later, Sachdan posted this.[/quote'] Umm.. the thing is, if Pujara played matches on flat tracks, it wasn't as if others were playing matches on minefields! What does it ssay about other young batsmen who can't score as heavily even on flat tracks?

Didn't have a clue actually. I didn't even know we recognized domestic seasons. They don't even advertise this stuff on the media. Very poor and completely disrespecting and taking the shine off the performances of teh domestic players. Not too worried about the likes of Sehwag because any follower of int'l cricket knows he's been in terrific form lately.

There are a few cricketers who are clearly better than Pujara. What Pujara did was score heavily on the flat tracks and he failed elsewhere. He averaged close to 55 having converted almost all of his 50s into big hunderds. That's not good enough. On top, his technique is not that good.

These awards not for 2008-2009, these are for 2007-2008 where Tyagi took 41 wickets in ranji season. he got injured and couldnt pick that form this season, but in between he bowled well against Aussie A team which has some good batsmen like katich, rhonchi, Adam voges, philip hughes (selected for SA tour now) he was pacey and even australians praised his pace and swing especially reverse swing him.

I was inspired by Tendulkar: Sehwag

MUMBAI: Flamboyant opener Virender Sehwag on Wednesday said he wanted to emulate his idol Sachin Tendulkar and win the Best Cricketer of the Year Award of the Cricket Board and was happy to achieve the feat after eight years in international cricket. "I have always watched Sachin on TV and wanted to emulate him. It's a great honour to win this award, especially a year after my role model Tendulkar won it. It took me eight years to do so. My first award was the Castrol Award. I thank the BCCI for this honour," Sehwag said after receiving the Polly Umrigar Award from Board President Shashank Manohar. Gundappa Viswanath, the ex-India skipper and one-time middle-order mainstay, received the CK Nayudu Lifetime Achievement Award from Manohar at the annual awards function. The former wrist specialist, who brought unbridled joy to millions of Indian fans with his stylish play, said he considered the twin triumphs in 1971 in the West Indies and England as his best moments. "I consider the 1971 tour under Ajit Wadekar of the West Indies and England as my best cricketing moments. Again we chased 400-plus and won (at Port of Spain in Trinidad in 1976) and I got a hundred which also is a special moment for me," said the Bangalore-based Vishwanath. "I was inspired by my elder brothers who used to play for their clubs. I used to watch them. That inspired me to take up the game. I was eight or nine then," Viswanath said. Manohar complimented Team India's performance, saying the squad has not lost a series in his six-month tenure. "I hope India will continue to perform in similar manner. I wish them all the best for the New Zealand tour," he said in his address to the gathering which included the New Zealand-bound Indian team members, former cricketers and current and former BCCI officials.
Is there a bigger Sachin fan than Veeru ?? :icflove: http://cricket.timesofindia.indiatimes.com/I_was_inspired_by_Tendulkar_Sehwag/articleshow/4151847.cms
