I think the greatness from ilayaraja is that once he creates a tune for a certain movie in a language, he will never use the same tune in any other language. Well maybe he did it rarely. In Aradhana (Chiranjeevi's, not the Hindi film), the "Are emaindi.. " song has been used in Tamizh in a completely different situation. Furthermore, Ilayaraja had a set scale for all rain songs. And he played a variety of parameters in the same scale for ALL of his rain songs. Its pretty awesome.

But thats not the case, a lot of tamil longs are virtually unknown to an average telugu guy and vice-versa... iam not talking about dubbed and remade movies. whereas take the case of ARR. He regularly tinkers with his tamil songs for his hindi projects. He's composed a LOT of songs dude. Quite often, the tunes that he reused in Telugu (or vice-versa) are from relatively unknown films. Actually, it didn't really matter for Ilayaraja whether the film was dubbed or not. Chiranjeevi's Rudraveena was remade in Tamil with Kamal, and the tunes he used were not the same.
