bobbydhillon
Suspended Pakistan players set to meet with Modi Cricinfo staff May 10, 2009 Sohail Tanvir hopes he and other "suspended" Pakistan players can have a positive dialogue with Lalit Modi © AFP Sohail Tanvir, the left-arm fast bowler, has said he and other Pakistan players will go to South Africa to discuss their IPL suspension with tournament chairman and commissioner Lalit Modi. The Pakistan Cricket Board had earlier banned its players from participating in the IPL after the country's relations with India deteriorated after the terror attacks in Mumbai in November. When the tournament was moved out of India - over security reasons - the Pakistan players were hopeful of returning but IPL officials said it wouldn't be possible as the squads had already been finalised earlier. "A number of issues need to be discussed and we'll be accompanied by a representative of the company we've engaged to handle our case," Tanvir, the highest wicket-taker in the 2008 IPL season, told the Kolkata-based Telegraph. "I strongly feel the IPL should've reviewed our status, especially after our government issued the NOCs once the tournament moved out of India." Six Pakistani players had their contracts terminated by their franchises before the IPL auction in February. But Tanvir and Kamran Akmal of the Rajasthan Royals, Umar Gul of the Kolkata Knight Riders and Misbah-ul-Haq of the Bangalore Royal Challengers only had their contracts suspended, thereby leaving the door open for a potential return. "I believe we should've been allowed to play once the IPL was shifted to South Africa," he said. "I'm confident I would've matched, if not bettered, last year's record [22 wickets in 11 games]." The four suspended players had in February appealed to the President of Pakistan to compensate them for the loss in earnings brought about by the government's decision to not allow them to travel to India and take part. Asked whether compensation from the franchises would be high on their agenda, Tanvir said that would indeed be discussed in South Africa. Tanvir was also concerned about the lack of quality competition ahead of next month's ICC World Twenty20 in England. "You can only gain by playing with and against the best in the world," he said. "However, our board has worked out a schedule, whereby we'll get to play some Twenty20 matches at home, before we leave for England. .

Zap_Brannigan
Pakis really think that the world revolves around them. It was simple. If the paki terrorist govt did not prevent them from playing, IPL would have had to compensate. But they jumped the gun and made it easier for IPL to suspend their contracts. Then IPL went and filled up their quota of foreign players excluding the pakis. Do the pakis expect that the IPL will change rules for them when the tournament was moved ? The whole lot are born with giant begging bowls. First it was their govt. begging money from US by holding themselves hostages, then its was the PCB begging ICC to compensate for being terroristan and now the paki players. When will they get some self respect and brains?

Zap_Brannigan
Man you guys seriously need to discuss such sorts of topic with a cool head and less egoistic views. Some of us over here are under the impression that we have a stake in BCCI's wealth giving us the right of calling Pakistani's beggars and what not. We do have a stake in BCCI as does every Indian just like we have a stake in the govt. irrespective of whether we benefit from it or not. But the beggar comment doesnt mean that Pakis are poor. Tanvir and his ilk are international players and obviously get more money than most of us here. The beggar comment is pointed more towards their attitude that they should get paid even if its their fault. The pak govt. basically told US that they would destroy themselves if they did not get money. PCB wants money from ICC even when ICC had to pull out because pak is a terrorist nation filled with terrorists and most of their police officials would rather play dead or hide behind bushes than protect others. Same with tanvir and co. It wasn't IPL's fault that they were suspended. But they demand money from IPL.

vvvslaxman
Yes. They have this big empty pride that just annoys everybody. Some of their loyal fans keep claiming we don't care about IPL".. We don't watch IPL we only watch tom and jerry - It keeps getting funnier to see them going out of their way to live in denial. Every time they do somebody from their own country give a slap like this. Make them run around. Make them grovel. They should never be inducted again into IPL. That Tanvir guy is a piece of work, he wanted more money first and then he said he wasnt interested in playing IPL now he wants money again. Modi is smart , theres no way he'll give in easily. On another darker note, it seems theres a supari on him and his family courtesy Chota Shakeel whos miffed at Pak players exclusion.

Buddy there is no other way to sugarcoat this news, this is the highest level of begging. Pak government's refusal to send team to India was more of a sentimental decision than anything. A desperate attempt to take revenge of the ind-pak series cancellation by hurting IPL franchises. But apparently their cricketers are even more desperate than their government. They are taking this India travel ban quite literally and dont seem to mind serving their Indian masters even in SA. Poor pak government, they were hoping they got their "boycott IPL" message across quite nicely. But they didnt know they were dealing with a bunch of beggers for cricketers who'd put IPL riches before their country's pride.

Yes i agree they dont have any chance in this case since it was their govt who didnt give them NOC.And teams have to be finalised 1 month before IPL. vvvslaxman
They also wants to sue ICC.They are digging their own grave. They keep forgetting they are part of ICC. Samiuddin's article on cricinfo has highlighted what a futile exercise it is going to be. And also this tendency to do things just for the sake of empty posturing have landed them in trouble more than in paradise. One driver with presence of mind has saved whatever the dignity they had. But for him cricket world would still be mourning. They took it in the right spirit so did the officials. PCB was lucky they didn't sue them. Pakistan is not in any bargaining position. They have already fulfilled the clownish acts quota for the year. Blaming Broad, Blaming BCCI, Blaming everything under the sun. This is just the tip of the iceberg. This blaming mentality is infectious. Afridi not long blamed Laxman as an inept captain. Gul blamed Ganguly suggesting he has no idea what he is doing. yoda
I would like for politics and sports to be kept separate especially when we are talking about a pro league with international players. If it involves a bilateral series I agree that you can't really separate them. Now, PCB is the one who started all this tamasha it appears, although I thought there was some news about India not giving visas to the Pak players to play in the IPL (this when these games were still scheduled to be played in India).
