Batsmen hitting sixes when in the 90s - Is it really unselfish?

I have heard people, including commies, talk about how un-selfish a player like Sehwag is because he hits sixes to bring up his 100 and does not care if he gets out. But is this really unselfish? Does it really mean that he does not care about the situation and is not under pressure. IMO both the changes, being slower in the 90s or trying to score faster both show that the player is indeed thinking a lot about his 90s IMO trying to hit sixes EACH TIME one is in the 90s is a very selfish act if you do it disregarding the situation. Many times a wicket might trigger a collapse. When it was done once or twice it was fine. But now bowlers anticipate Sehwag trying to go for the big hit. Sehwag does it nowadays not because he doesnt care about the 100s. In fact he shows it is in his mind as he changes his gear in the 90s. Sehwag has a reputation to keep now and so tries to hit sixes in the 90s each time. Its not for his team (at leats fr that one shot) but for himself that he does it.

Its quite brave but not unselfish. But its not necessarily a bad ploy. It makes a statement. When a batsman hits a six at will on 98, it leaves a demoralizing effect on the bowlers. Besides, every batsman has his style of playing. So a Sehwag may be expected to play cautiously at the beginning of his innings, but as he will gradually get into his own game. He would be quite set and free by the time he enters his 90s. No situation in the game can ask a set batsman to play in an unnatural way in contrast to his natural style. So even if India is eight down, you would want Sehwag to continue in his own way. However, Sehwag was on 199 when he did deny a single that could have taken him to 200....for the sake of the game.

My two cents, you taking the whole thing wrong way. For Sehwag its different. People praise him because weather he is on 70, or 40 or 99, he will play the same way.. He won't cut down on this run rate when he is in 90s.. He doesn't have any crave for reaching 100 by polluting the run rate of the team by playing slowly..

Well the fact is, for Sehwag it does not depend on the ball. What he wouldnt try on the same ball when in the 80s, he would try in the 90s.

Unselfish is when you are on the look out for quick runs and you don't slow down for your century. Dinesh karthik once did that in a Test. He could have played slowly and got to 100. But he didn't stop attacking. He got out at 93.

Nope, it doesnt remain the same. There are matches where he has not hit a single six, particularly in tests, yet he still tries to in the 90s. So he does change his pace and does not remain in the same flow

Contrary to what it seems Sehwag is an intelligent cricketer, he just doesn't go blindly smashing the ball, well more often than not.

Be natural and put the bad balls away.Being defensive does not help. But here Sehwag makes a conscious effot of hitting even good balls for six to get to his 100

this whole selfishness thing is overrated. A batsmen batting 5 hours for his country in incredible heat is not selfish, even if it takes him more then usual amount of balls to get there in the 90s. if it happens repeatedly, then you might have a case. Maybe Kallis is an offender here. A lot of pakis say Tendulkar is selfish because of his knocks in Muiltan and a 100 against Australia in Mohali in 2003 or something...ridiculous. Look at his ball by ball and notice that his last 70 odd runs came at an 80 S/R!
