There is absolutely nothing we can do about that because of the fact that he is such a clean striker of the ball. India cannot afford to carry a long tail esp. in t20 format. I hope Irfan just bowls stumps to stumps without worrying about getting swing. He was successful in the last T20 WC because of this strategy.

I dont want India to take Englands route ...having bits and pieces cricketers Crapthan is very mediocre and doesn't deserve a place for this batting..rather good to have a proper batsman or a bowler to play I hope Dhoni throws him out sooner than later See what happened today, one nonsensical over and how much they got...that's called momentum This guy can do the same against bigger teams

Irfan adds more value to our T20 team than it is overtly evident to us. Unfortunately, his bowling seems below par because he started off with such a big bang in international cricket with his bowling exploits, that our expectations of his bowling is higher than what it should be. But look at his T20 record in isolation and it’ll become immediately clear that he adds significant amount of value to the team in this form of the game. His economy rate is 7.91, which isn’t flash by any means but is not horrible either. However, he averages more than 30 with the bat, at a SR of more than 125. And this is where he makes up for the apparent inadequacies in his bowling. Remember, we won the T20 match against Lanka, in Lanka, because of the Irfan-Yusuf partnership. He also played a decent hand in the last over against B’desh scoring 11 off 3 balls. The score may look trivial, but T20 is all about players stepping up and coming up with such sort of performances. Even with the Punjab team in IPL, he was one of their leading bowlers and a very handy bat. More than ever, his place in the team becomes more important now because are only playing 5 specialist batsmen + Yusuf + Irfan. We cannot afford to drop him for someone like Kumar or RP and have Bhajji at no.7. That’ll make our tail dangerously long. And T20 is all about depth in batting. And as a minor aside, his fielding is steady and reliable also.

So you would rather have a long tail (if India opts to play another bowler instead of IKP) or play another batsman, which will mean Dhoni using a part timer to fill in the void of 5th bowler. I think IKP is fit to play a 5th bowler if he is used in the middle overs and not given the new ball. His batting is an asset and he will come handy when India finds themselves in an awkward position (I hope not ). P.S: A request; stop maligning the players' name. It will only get nasty if you opt to continue.

The team composition dictates that Irfan simply has to play - there is no alternative. Ojha and Harbhajan are better bowlers than any of our reserve seamers, Zaheer and Ishant are again certain selections and it makes no sense to play a batsman and have 12 overs of spin including part time. That will severely restrict plan B options for the team. Playing an extra bowler means Harbhajan will be coming at 7 and he is certainly no Kapil Dev. Perhaps, Dhoni should bank more on Ishant and Zaheer opening the bowling and picking up 1-2 quick wickets and let Irfan slip through a couple of decent overs rather than opening with him. He won't be all that bad in the middle overs with the field spread out and can realistically give you 3 overs for around 20-25. The biggest asset of his batting as someone mentioned is that he never requires sighters before launching into the big shots. That's an extraordinary talent to have given the position he bats in. Even more accomplished hitters like Morkel and Oram knock a couple of deliveries around before going for their shots. More often than not he will be coming in with no more than 8-10 potential deliveries to face and it's critical at that point that a single is kept as the last resort and the first attempt on the ball is to absolutely rip the cover off it.

I will stop calling names I would rather have a batsman play in his place...Sehwag is back, so DK / Jadeja This team is blessed with so many good spinning options. The partimers like Yusuf / Raina / Yuvi can do a much better job than that IPs so called bowling

Irfan adds value wit his end overs batting..but certainly not with this bowling He is infact detrimental...why not play 7 batsman...anyone can bowl much better than what he is bowling now

In English conditions it not a good idea to go with just 2 seamers. It will be a nightmare for captain if one of the bowler has a bad day. It mean you won' t have pacers for death overs, power play overs. You cannot bank on spinners every time to do the trick for you.

I honestly think our part timers can bowl better than Irfan (Yusuf + Yuvraj + Raina + Rohit). Zak + Ishant + Bhajji + Ojha = that's 4 quality proper bowlers. Yusuf & Yuvraj are decent bowlers, who can fill in 2 overs each for the 5th bowler slot. If things don't go well for one of the regulars, Raina & Rohit can easily slot in for an over or two. The only problem then is that we only have 2 fast bowlers in the ** & the death, which can be a problem against quality teams. I would take the chance, though. Bowl Zak + Ishant for 5 overs in **, and 3 overs between them at the death. Bowl Bhajji/Ojha/Yusuf for 1 over in **.....
