NEW DELHI: Flying Indian Air Force One may be her ultimate dream, but UP chief minister Mayawati is all set to get a fancy pair of wings. A brand new Hawker 900 XP is being prepared at a hangar at IGI airport’s domestic terminal side for being delivered to the UP government next week. With a list price of $15.5 million or nearly Rs 76 crore, this is the second most expensive jet built by US midsize business jet giant Hawker Beechcraft. Among the aircraft manufactured by Hawker, only Hawker 4000 scores over the 900 XP in terms of price and performance. This aircraft can fly nonstop up to 5,240 km that covers distant places like Cairo, Moscow, Shanghai and Hong Kong. The Hawker 4000 has a range of 6,075 km that can take it nonstop to places like Tokyo and Budapest and costs $22.5 million or Rs 110 crore. While midsize business jets like Hawker can fly Delhi-London one stop, the high-end Gulfstreams that can dot its route nonstop cost about $50 million. The UP government’s plane is parked at the hangar of InterGlobe Aviation, which is the sole sales and service agent for Hawker Beechcraft in SAARC region. With this acquisition, humble UP will join the ranks of other more developed states and big industrial houses that own fancy Hawkers, Bombardier, Falcons and Cessnas. I am not much worried for the jet but hope the corrupt UP ministers do not use it for private use and other such things wasting money :nervous:

This is something new - Indian Chief Ministers using govt. money to buy corporate jets. If it helps her to govern better, it may turn out to be a worthwhile investment after all. What we dont wanna see is reports that this jet was used for flying 'special guests' and dinner parties. That'd suck, especially given most of U.P lives on less than $2/day.

:isalute: in the south Karunanidhi is giving free Gold rings, color tv and in the north she is buying jets and still so many people live in slums , so many kids who cant go to school , so many people who dont get 2 meals a day ... I dont know why the opposition never says anything when the ruling party comes out with these announcements

Lol! How the hell would the second most expensive jet in the world help her to govern UP better? Where does Mayawati needs to do flying which can only be done in such an expensive jet? Heck besides Lucknow and Varanasi UP does not even have any other half decent airport.

Who knows, the jet might help reach out to rural communites and meet the respective IAS and IPS officers more frequently. Lets give her the benefit of the doubt to begin with at least. And I am pretty sure there are plenty of air-strips in UP where such small air-craft can land.

There needs to be a little more justification than a flimsy "who knows it might" explanation when the tax payers are booting out Rs. 76 crore for an aircraft don't you think? For starters why does the CM of a state which borders the national capital need an aricraft with a 5000+ km flying distance?

O' Man! I work for Hawker Beechcraft here in Wichita, Kansas and this is news to me. Considering the shady character Mawavati is, I am sure the use of this aircraft is going to be abused for non-governmental reasons.
