The Outsider Posted June 30, 2009 Posted June 30, 2009 Most of the people in the world are idiots. It doesnt mean we should assume everyone is an idiot when we speak to them. Or how would you like if your American colleague asks you how much dowry you got when you got married? Or if someone asks a muslim whether he is a terrorist or how many wife he has. Or a black guy' date=' how many felonies he has committed.[/quote'] Do you really think majority of Indians take dowry - actually in this case a significant minority do and I don't get peeved at the question even though it's not 70-80% but more like 10-20%. Do you seriously think majority of Muslims are terrorists or have multiple wives? Do you seriously think the majority of black guys have felonies against their names? If yes, please provide some numbers to back it up. On the other hand it is a fact that at least 70-80% Indians can strike decent Hindi conversation. Your analogies don't have any ground and the likes of felonies and terrorism are downright dumb.
Zap_Brannigan Posted June 30, 2009 Posted June 30, 2009 Do you really think majority of Indians take dowry - actually in this case a significant minority do and I don't get peeved at the question even though it's not 70-80% but more like 10-20%. Your analogies don't have any ground and the likes of felonies and terrorism are downright dumb. Its about perspective about different race, religion etc. Most people who talk to you in Hindi, doesnt think that 70-80% knows hindi and thus the probability of an Indian to know hindi is high. They just talk to you assuming that you know hindi. Even if they do know this percentage, they should know that 1 in 5 cant speak hindi and yet they start a conversation without asking first. So either they are extremely rude or have no idea about percentages you quoted. To them, everyone from India can talk in hindi. Its the same perspective that i brought in my analogies. Yes, more weddings in India have dowry involved. Not the bad kind you see in movies but things like the girl getting some jewelery or vehicle etc. If you spend any time with some ppl from Andra doing their masters in US, you will know that dowry goes much bigger than simple stuff.Infact, i can say that all the master students i've encountered in my school and talked to about this, have said that they will take a big dowry. It doesnt mean they actually did or every andraite will do it. But my percentages are 100% because i've met only a select group. Same for everything. The terrorist or multiple wifes are exaggerated but going by movies, celebrities and hanging out in the same club as nigerians and north africans who deal in drugs, i have to say the perspective of a black person being shady isnt far off. Isnt one-third of african american been in the prison at some point or the other. Add that with what i see, i can say that more 50% of black people are involved in something illegal. Its about as true as someone who thinks that India is full of slum dwellers based on Slumdog millionaire.

nikred Posted June 30, 2009 Posted June 30, 2009 I can see it from your perspective, but in practice - it's definitely tough. I am sure even if we get a crash course, it wouldn't be easy Case in point, have you seen Sriram? he doesn't look like a south indian to me You look at Lurker who is from UP, but looks like a south indian I am a dark skinned South Indian but for some reason people think I am a bengali, maharashtrian, delhite but never a telugu guy. Even after telling them I am from AP they ask where I am originally from. I think its more to do with stereotyping, a preconceived notion that a person from a certain place has to look a certain way. But its really funny when I go with my mom for shopping. She could easily pass off for a typical Gujarati lady. My mom is uncomfortable talking in Hindi as she is not used to it. Any shop we go the shopwallah looks at her and starts talking in hindi, my mom immediately starts talking in telugu much to the shopwallahs amazement. Once my dad's muslim friend asked when my dad will come, she tried talking in hindi she ended up saying in true hyderabadi ishtyle "kab aate ki kya ki". I ROFLed the whole day.:P
Ram Posted June 30, 2009 Posted June 30, 2009 I dont like it when all south Indians are referred to as Madrasis. Thats almost GW Bush level of ignorance and bone headedness. FFS, South India has 5 prosperous states and a national territory. I dont like it when Tamilians assume all south Indians understand Tamil I hate the concept of horoscope matching I think you just made those two up.
nikred Posted June 30, 2009 Posted June 30, 2009 I think you just made those two up. He sure made up 5 South Indian states. :--D BTW whats with you and geography? Did you make some type of goof up earlier?
Ram Posted June 30, 2009 Posted June 30, 2009 He sure made up 5 South Indian states. :--D BTW whats with you and geography? Did you make some type of goof up earlier? Sigh......Its a looooooooong story. Read this; http://indiancricketfans.com/showthread.php?p=652500&highlight=clarion#post652500 In my eagerness to rally my fellow South Indians, I wrote Punjab was the northern most team in the IPL, completely ignoring the presence of a certain team called Delhi Duds. :D B->
flamy Posted June 30, 2009 Posted June 30, 2009 1. People Swearing.... I hate ppl who swear... I never swear or swore at anyone unless in a fight :D ... Also girls swearing is the biggest turn off for me.. girls talking dirty is hot for me.
The Outsider Posted June 30, 2009 Posted June 30, 2009 Its about perspective about different race, religion etc. Most people who talk to you in Hindi, doesnt think that 70-80% knows hindi and thus the probability of an Indian to know hindi is high. So either they are extremely rude or have no idea about percentages you quoted. To them, everyone from India can talk in hindi. Yeah, and perspective is what I am trying to get through to you. If you meet 100 Indians in your life and 80 of them are able to converse in Hindi, how would you know the 101st would not be able to? If I interview 50 Ivy League students and 40 of them turn out to be smart, I assume the 51st would be smart as well unless he proves otherwise. If Goldman Sachs comes up with 200 predictions and 160 turn out to be true vis a vis finance, I would assume the 201st to be true as well. All of that unless said to be otherwise. BTW, Belgium has a 60% Dutch people population, and a fair bit speak Flemish and German but people do assume that Belgians speak Dutch and if you bring it up with a Belgian they don't get anal about it. Yes, a fair to vast majority people from India can converse in Hindi! But I am not talking about some small smaple size I met over dinners or my grad school - I am talking about actual numbers. 70-80% Indians can converse in Hindi. That's not my experience that's a fact! Oh, and Americans or people in any other country give gifts to their son/daughter in laws. I suppose that's dowry? Same for everything. The terrorist or multiple wifes are exaggerated but going by movies, celebrities and hanging out in the same club as nigerians and north africans who deal in drugs, i have to say the perspective of a black person being shady isnt far off. Isnt one-third of african american been in the prison at some point or the other. Add that with what i see, i can say that more 50% of black people are involved in something illegal. Its about as true as someone who thinks that India is full of slum dwellers based on Slumdog millionaire. What percentage of black people in the US have been convicted of a felony? As for breaking laws, I drive in New York and see everyone breaking some traffic law or the other. I suppose that implies all New Yorkers are criminals. Here are some facts : 1. A fair majority of Indians can converse in Hindi. 2. It is only people who cannot/do not converse in Hindi who feel offended about others assuming they are able to. And as I said in a previous analogy - I don't feel peeved when people assume me to be an IT guy because I am in a predominantly IT party so I see no reason for people to feel peeved because they happen to be non Hindi speaking in a predominantly Hindi speaking country. Do you think a Spanish only person should feel peeved in the US when spoken to in English? BTW, all this is pretty rich coming from you who has a field day on this MB generalizing against Pakistanis!!

The Outsider Posted June 30, 2009 Posted June 30, 2009 Here's Zap_Brannigan - the champion of getting peeved off against generalizations : Its still better than sucking modis dick by paki players last year Did all Paki players such Modi's dick? Do you have documentary proof? Or some Andhraite grad students told you in your university? Chances of the paki players being terrorists is much more probable How did you calculate those probabilities? Your Andhraite grad students in your univ gave you formulas? Werent they just accusing us just a few weeks back of backstabbing them? Now they want our help . TYpical paki mentality...Just like they accuse US of all things bad with pakiland and still hold a begging bowl How do you know about the "typical" Paki mentality? Your Andhraite fellow students are psychologists? Even so how did you allow them to make the generalization? Pakis really think that the world revolves around them. Did your Andhraite grad students fill you in on this as well that Pakis have made some breakthrough about the solar system and the earth we are unaware of? What percentage of Pakis think the world revolves around them? here is the paki mentality - Younis : Thank god we were late by 5 mintues Pakis - Allah be great!he saved them!! Allah dont like policemen, so the 5 deaths are allahs will Need I say anything!! In fact I am tired of pulling up all these posts, just search through what you have written on the MB.......
Zap_Brannigan Posted June 30, 2009 Posted June 30, 2009 And as I said in a previous analogy - I don't feel peeved when people assume me to be an IT guy because I am in a predominantly IT party so I see no reason for people to feel peeved because they happen to be non Hindi speaking in a predominantly Hindi speaking country. Do you think a Spanish only person should feel peeved in the US when spoken to in English? BTW, all this is pretty rich coming from you who has a field day on this MB generalizing against Pakistanis!! Its my pet peeve and some others here. You might be understanding with it but i am not. Even if 1 in 5 Indian cannot speak hindi, i would expect them to talk to me in English, esp since i am talking about experiences in US and not in India. How about someone who is Spanish only by ethnicity and is spoken to in Spanish in US by almost every Spanish person he meets? Dowry by anyname is dowry. Dowry has been present in every part of the world but it is spoken in negative connotation in Indian marriage system. Majority receive dowry but only a minor % is forced, yet the general perception by americans is that dowry is bad. It doesnt mean that i wont get annoyed if some american asks me how much dowry i will get when i get married. Reg. Pakistanis, ofcourse i generalize. I never said that i am holier than thou or that people shouldnt get annoyed with me. My general assumption is that even a common man in pak. supports terrorism by supporting madrassahs which spread hatred and in some instances provide training to these terrorist. I know it is more of a vague assumption based on emotion than on fact, but since it has affected me in someway, i will continue to do it. I am also aware that terrorist gets a lot of funding from Saudi Arabia to whose pocket i contribute by driving my car. If tomorrow, vatican city starts killing people around the world, i would blame every roman catholic for funding vatican city even though they didn't really mean it or intend their donations to kill ppl.
gs Posted June 30, 2009 Posted June 30, 2009 He sure made up 5 South Indian states. :--D BTW whats with you and geography? Did you make some type of goof up earlier? Goa, Karnataka, AP, TN and Kerala - dufus, how many do they look like?
gs Posted June 30, 2009 Posted June 30, 2009 I think you just made those two up. I speak from my personal experiences in school and college. You disagreeing with it makes no difference to me.
