MarathaPride Posted July 3, 2009 Posted July 3, 2009 My question is directed to the desis who have worked/are working in the UK.. There are talks of my team (US) building out a team in London, and I could get an opportunity to go there. Problem is, I have spoken to a few desis who have worked there, and they ALL tell me that the racism I could encounter will be unlike anything I have experienced. They tell me that the inclusive working culture prevalent here is not particularly easy to find on the other side of the pond. So, bhai/behen log working in the UK - what is your opinion..is this all true? Going beyond the workplace, what is the current situation re: discrimination and racism towards Indians in general? If given the choice, would you stay put or shift to Angrez land? Immigration rules are a bit less stringent than what we have here, but if racism/discrimination etc. are real problems then I should give this much much more thought. fineleg Posted July 3, 2009 Posted July 3, 2009 From what I've heard from friends/family in UK, the discrimination is a bit more than in US, but not like real bad or anything. So, if it is a good promotion, then you can choose to go.

There are some oddballs who think its funny to talk about Indian food habits and culture. BTW... These guys love to eat our cuisine though. Most of the hate in the UK is directed against the Muslims especially of the Pakistani and Bangladeshi origin. I dont know much about the kind of subservient racism in corporate circles. but all I can say is that there are no issues like the ones in Australia.

The answer has to be yes we all encounter racism of some sort at school mainly. Once i moved to London however things were very different, its more equal here its so multicultural that being indian doesnt make much of a difference particularly when you have grown up here!! However the sad thing is there is a new type racism here and its actually between indians themselves - indians who migrated here a generation ago and people like urself that come here more recently. becuase of accents and mannerismsbeing different its easy to have the mick taken out of you - although its no serious level of prejudice its still sad to see it happen! some of my best friends are the more recent arrivals from india i find them well spoken polite educated and very warm hearted!! my take on it is come over to london experience it! there is no serious level of racism but if you do encounter it then speak out and make it apparent!!

I've personally experienced a fair amount of racism including a good kicking once when I was a kid, and I'm half English. I grew up in a small town where there weren't and still are, hardly any non-whites. In my secondary school of 800 odd pupils only about 8 kids were from ethnic minorities. Expect more racism especially of the 'silent type' if you go out of the big cities and in to small towns and villages, especially in the North of England and Scotland. I live in Newcastle upon Tyne now and there's a lot of racists here. Usage of the terms, paki, ******, darky and chinky is commonplace. I've seen it myself on public transport here and around the City Centre. Most people here aren't racist but there's an undercurrent of it in most places. As others have pointed out a lot of prejudice is meted out to Muslims and Eastern Europeans (Poles and Romanians) more than anyone else. On the other hand I've heard from several black guys that they feel the US is a LOT more racist than the UK. My father used to work in the US and says most of the prejudice there is against Afro-Caribbeans.
Sooda Posted July 4, 2009 Posted July 4, 2009 I dont think the UK is opnely racist though often I feel tht if you scratch the surface most goray are racist As Maggot B says the north/NE tends to be bad- Leeds say. Bradford has loads of Paks and the whites hate them there. The bigger cities in the south and midlands (London, Birmingham) are where most asians are so its better- theres an acceptance On a broader note integration between races in this country is poor. far worse in europe im sure- but its not great here. Bottom line though Martha is its not as bad as it has been made out to you at all. Ive lived here for a while and no open racism-workplaces have been very inclusive

Not an ABCD, but I have an extremely strong socal (southern california) accent (lived there for 10 years since I was 14 before going to NY)...i have tried to tone it down, but i have grown used to non-socal-ers taking the p*ss outta me because of that...:giggle: Maggot/Anon/Sooda - You guys have touched upon the subject of Paks in the UK. As a side question..what is the overall relationship like between Indians and Pak's out there? Some say all is fine..some other disagree. When I was in college a couple of years back..we had a Sikh UK fellow join as an international transfer. He would tell us stories of Pakistani gangs (Chalvey boys, Al Muhajiron) squaring off against Sikh and Hindu groups (Sher-e-Punjab) causing tensions. He mentioned the areas of Slough and Southall were the main areas where these activities took place. Can you guys comment on this aspect as well? The reason I am asking this question is that I thought the chap was just messing around...but after seeing some recent youtube videos of Indians and Pakistanis squaring off against each other, I decided maybe he wasnt joking around after all. One of my best friends is a Pakistani. Only time there was tension in my group which was about 12 of us 50-50 Indian-Pakistani is when the crap was going on in Gujarat. I had to remind some of my Pakistani friends that we aren't all like those RSS/VHP/BJP dickheads.

But these hooligans do exist, especially the second and third generation pakis, who form gangs. They are mostly from the poorer sections of the society with little access to quality education and seem to evoke strong reactions from other sections of the societies. They are also a reason that BNP is thriving in some parts of UK.... Educated pakis are a lot more cultured and tolerant I would say...
