Ganguly to lead Kolkata Knight Riders in IPL-3

Recommended Posts

New Delhi: Former India skipper Sourav Ganguly is all set to lead the Kolkata Knight Riders in the third edition of the cash rich Indian Premier League. Ganguly who was replaced by New Zealander Brendon McCullum in the second edition of the tournament in South Africa, met the franchise owner Shahrukh Khan in England when he was there to watch the ICC World Twenty20 Championship. They discussed about captaincy as well as appointment of the new coach of the team for the next season of the twenty20 tournament. According to sources, the KKR management will like to announce the decision later in the middle of August once the new coach is appointed. Though team management prefers Dave Whatmore for the job, Ganguly prefers India's former coach John Wright. McCullum will be unavailable for the third edition of the IPL due to national duty. http://cricketnext.in.com/news/ganguly-to-lead-kolkata-knight-riders-in-ipl3/42734-13.html

good, taking what I posted earlier in another thread KKR will reach the semis next year if: 1)Buchanan is fired 2)Ganguly is reinstated they went one step further and brought Wright in. Watch this team go from strength to strength. They just need to get Akhtar back.

Yes, lets spread genital warts to the rest of the team too. Oh wait, you're the guy who said "pakistanis on ICF are like blacks in America." Not worth talking about it.

The petty politics involving Buchanan and the entire Ganguly captaincy issue notwithstanding, how could KKR possibly even pick someone who was actually dropped from the Indian ODI team for slow batting, to represent their T20 team? That is mind-boggling. Ganguly may or may not be effective as a leader, but as a T20 batsman, he’s a massive dead-weight that is anchoring his team’s ship at the same lonely spot in the ocean. Have KKR not learned their lesson despite two catastrophic seasons in which they were the ONLY team to not turn in a worthwhile performance? Does SRK still want to use his T20 for playing politics and propping up his acting career?

Exactly. SG is a burden to a team as a T20 bat.

VVS should not be playing either. In fact, he missed most of last season’s matches due to ‘injury’ and look where DC ended up. And there is a big difference between Dravid and Ganguly. Dravid was dropped not just for slow batting, but he was just horribly out of form. He was first dropped mid-way during the Ind-Aus ODI series in India in late 2007 (which we lost 2-4) because he couldn’t put bat to ball. He was having a run of low scores. And that could happen to anyone. But since his omission, our ODI performances have skyrocketed, which made his passage back into the team really hard. There’s no doubt that he’s still more than a handy ODI/T20 bat, but his age, our good run in ODIs and T20s made his exit from the team terminal. Ganguly, on the other hand, is an entirely different case. He was still scoring runs when was dropped. In fact, he was one of our most prolific scorers in the calendar year 2006-07 but was still dropped because even though he was scoring a handful of runs, his runs weren’t taking our team anywhere because they came at a pace that was too slow. In fact, in one of my earlier posts on ICF, I actually made a case for him to be dropped from the team (while he was still in it and scoring runs..) pointing out his sedate strike-rates, even in high-target chases. So, keeping in mind those things, you simply cannot compare Dravid and Ganguly and say ‘Well, Dravid was dropped too, but isn’t he scoring lots of runs in IPL?’
