Eight players undergo fitness tests Special Correspondent GEARING UP: Gautam Gambhir, R.P. Singh and M.S. Dhoni go through the drills at the Ferozeshah Kotla on Monday. NEW DELHI: Eight cricketers, including skipper M.S. Dhoni, went through a fitness test under the supervision of coach Gary Kirsten at the Ferozeshah Kotla here on Monday. The tests were basically a platform for Kirsten to interact with the players who have had a rare lay-off for more than a month. Apart from Dhoni, the others who attended the fitness drill were Harbhajan Singh, Ashish Nehra, R.P. Singh, Gautam Gambhir, Praveen Kumar, Suresh Raina and Ishant Sharma. The three-hour tests were for players from North, Central and East Zones. Yuvraj Singh will attend the session in Mumbai on Tuesday with players from West and South. Virender Sehwag, recovering from a shoulder injury, was not present. Focus on sprint repeat The focus was on sprint repeat, a drill that involves assessment of strong strides. The weather was not really amiable for such a fitness drill and the players too were hardly excited. Most of them have been training regularly during the one-month lay-off with concentration on gym work. As Kirsten noted at the end of the session, the idea was to assess their physical condition. He said the results of this test would be compared with the results of tests to be taken at the National Cricket Academy during the four-day preparatory camp from August 27 for the three-nation tournament in Sri Lanka to be held from Sept. 8. This is the beginning of our preparations for the coming season,” said Kirsten, expressing satisfaction with the way the players responded.

Glad that some sort of fitness camps are held before the season begins! Here is another news: Shastri happy with NCA’s progress Bangalore: The National Cricket Academy (NCA) Chairman Ravi Shastri said that he is happy with the academy’s progress after a long review meeting with the top-brass led by Director Dav Whatmore here on Monday. “We can keep learning and keep improving, and that process never stops but I am quite happy with how things are shaping up. We are well on track to becoming everything that should be expected of the country’s national academy,” Shastri said while Whatmore added: “They (players) want to come and work with us and to me that is the greatest endorsement of what we are doing.” Meanwhile the NCA is likely to host a preparatory camp for the Indian team from August 25 to 30. The players have a long season ahead with the BCCI’s inter-corporate tournament from September 1 to 8 being the prelude to the Tri-series in Sri Lanka from September 8. -------------------------------------------------------------- I think the day we'll start choosing the NCA squads who'll be trained and coached by various NCA coaches and trainers, I'll say that NCA of India came of age. Right now, don't think there is much to be happy about the Academy! Also, I find it quite strange that a batch of Indian players are having fitness training Delhi while another batch in the team will have it Mumbai as this report indicates: BCCI holds fitness camps in Delhi, Mumbai August 10, 2009 Gary Kirsten sprints along with Ashish Nehra and Ishant Sharma at the fitness camp in New Delhi The break in India's international calendar has allowed the BCCI to schedule fitness tests for select players in Delhi and Mumbai. The first batch of players, including Ishant Sharma, Harbhajan Singh, Gautam Gambhir, Praveen Kumar, Suresh Raina and Ashish Nehra, trained today at the Feroz Shah Kotla under the supervision of coach Gary Kirsten, mental conditioner Paddy Upton and team physio Nitan Patel. Virender Sehwag was not a part of the session in Delhi as he undergoing treatment for injured shoulder and is expected to be fit for the Champions Trophy in September. The second batch of players will meet in Mumbai on August 11. The BCCI is also likely to hold a camp for the senior team at the National Cricket Academy in Bangalore on August 25 after which the players, including MS Dhoni, will participate in the BCCI's inaugural inter-corporate tournament between September 1-8. India's next international assignment is a tri-series in Sri Lanka also featuring New Zealand starting September 12.

Eight players - Yuvraj Singh, who is a resident of Mumbai, Rohit Sharma, Abhishek Nayar, S Badrinath, Pragyan Ojha, Yusuf Pathan, Ravindra Jadeja and Dinesh Karthik - were part of the review at the Mumbai Cricket Association's indoor academy at the Bandra-Kurla Complex. The tests, done by trainer Ramji Srinivasan and under the supervision of coach Gary Kirsten, physical and mental conditioning coach Paddy Upton and physio Nitin Patel, were conducted away from the media glare. "Sachin was not available today," said Kirsten. "We only got the squad that was in the West Indies. Not everyone was available at such a short notice." Upton told the Hindustan Times that Tendulkar's fitness will be reviewed along with the Mumbai Indians squad on Wednesday, and the report forwarded to the BCCI. "It's been a good two days with the purpose to meet up with the guys who have been having time off," Kirsten said of the fitness reviews in New Delhi and Mumbai. "It was decided in the West Indies that we'd get together and this is the beginning of a process that we will need to work on. The guys responded very well and are in pretty good condition." Kirsten said that some players had 'a fair amount of niggles after the West Indies tour' and that everyone was doing pretty well now. The South African said that Virender Sehwag, rehabilitating for an operated right shoulder, would undergo a fitness test at the National Cricket Academy in Bangalore 'in a few days'. "We are happy with the way he is shaping up," Kirsten added. Kirsten said he had no problems with players participating in the Corporate Trophy (September 1-8) in between a camp in Bangalore and the tour of Sri Lanka in the second week of September. "The Corporate Trophy is part of the schedule and the camp is in Bangalore end of this month. I am sure the camp and the Corporate Trophy will fit into the schedule without problems," he said.
